Today we arrived in Malaga and boarded a bus to take us to the beach for our kayak trip. We traveled an hour to the beautiful beach town of Nerja and found a little beach dotted with palm trees. It was a blue bird day, mild and sunny. We got outfitted with life vests and paddles and then carried our kayaks down to the water's edge. After a brief lesson, we climbed into our 2-person kayak and started paddling out to sea. I was in front and as we pulled away from shore, I felt the boat tip and suddenly, we were both in the water. Damn! It was cold! I swam back to shore trying to catch my breath and kept getting knocked down by waves as I tried to walk out. I ended up ... read more

Hola Amigos! We took a flight out of London on Thursday night to Alicante (Spain). Expecting a burst of summer we stepped off the plane and had to put on jackets and beanies. We spent our first night in Alicante and the following day was black friday. Subsequenly not much in the town was open. We hunted around for a deal to get to the south of Spain (Malaga) however everything was out of our very limited price range so we decided to give hitchiking a go! 2 days and 7 rides later we arrived. Hard work and very cold! The transport ranged from a BMW to a family campervan with a crazy nana. Not many people spoke a word of english. It certainly was an experience on its own...not sure if we would advise anyone ... read more

Well here's how my trip to London with Lisa went down...it was quite an adventure: Monday - Arrived at the airport around 10:30 at night, went through customs and all that good stuff, then attempted to find our way around to our couchsurfers who lived about an hour away. So we went on a search for the train station to take us into town...by the time we got there they told us the next train to leave would be the last one to go where we needed to be. We asked what time that train would be leaving and he told us 11:15...the time was 11:11....so we RAN.... ALOT. Then we hopped on the underground tube from there, going the directions the internet has told us to take...Around midnight it turned out we didn't know what ... read more

Today is going to be an agressive travel day. We are driving over the mountains to Madrid where we catch a plane for Malaga and then drive the sea coast, up over another mountain range and arrive in Arcos for a three nights stay. We had a big breakfast for Spanish standards at the hotel and headed off. L&M know the area so we stopped at a small hamlet, Valsain, on the way out of town and could not believe the ruins. There are apparently so many ruins in Spain that some are just taken for granted and ignored. You can see from the photo that firewood is stacked against the stone arches with tractors parked nearby....amazing. As we headed into the mountains it started to snow and cloud covered so there was not much of ... read more

Today Lisa and I are leaving for London!! YAY! Unfortunately that means we will also be internetless because we are definitely not risking taking our computers along with us while couchsurfing and staying in hostels…but we are VERY excited, especially because we get to speak ENGLISH the entire time. For the first time in months we won’t have to worry about translating! It should be interesting because apparently Obama’s over there right now and its causing quite a commotion, but we’re not too worried about it. Guess what!! We have new students!! Two students just arrived in on Tuesday from the US…I’m not sure how long they’re staying until, but it sounds like it will be a month or two. Unfortunately that did mean we also lost a few students :( Our friend Obe from Denmark ... read more

Well its almost Semana Santa, so we're getting pretty anxious for some time off! Lisa and I are leaving for London Friday night, staying for four nights, and coming back on Tuesday so we can see how they celebrate Semana Santa over here. And supposedly we are supposed to watch out for Antonio Banderas, who has been wandering the streets and will continue to until he leaves at the end of the holiday... This weekend went by realllllyyyy fast. I spent Friday night at Lisa's house since her señora was gone visiting family, and then Saturday we went out since Madison's friend from home was celebrating her last night here. We all got pretty tired though and went home early! When I got home, I stuck my key in the lock to open the door, only ... read more

Well today has been a slightly depressing day because its stormy out, everyone’s sick, and my best friend here Lisa was really upset since her and her boyfriend from home broke up last night. She actually ended up going home early, I felt really bad for her  But on the bright side, after tomorrow, the weather is going to start getting really nice again and actually stay that way! And, we are leaving for London next week Friday…yay…although we haven’t found a place to stay yet! Oops…we are probably going to end up staying in a hotel because this whole couch surfing thing just isn’t working out. Yesterday Lisa I went to see a place called Banos Del Carmen, and we walked all the way there! It was on the way other side of Malaga, ... read more

Friday night - Madrid Friday night in Madrid was crazy, the central area was packed with tourists and locals looking to blow off some steam. The rumors that food is not available until 11:00 PM at night are not true unless you are looking for a traditional restaurant for a sit down meal. Tapas bars are always open for something to eat, even at 3 o'clock in the morning! So far the strangest tapas has been sautéed pigs ears in garlic and olive oil, and believe it or not they were very good, even Lisa gave them a try. So far our favorite tapa is croquettas, which is mashed potato, cheese, and either chicken or ham that is rolled into a ball and deep fried. Jim's rule of thumb, if it is deep fried it has ... read more

Well let's see here...this week went by really fast again. Lisa and I have been busy making plans for Semana Santa, and after shopping around for a while, we decided to go with visiting London. We found some tickets off of ryanair that leave from Malaga for 15 euros, but haven't bought any tickets back yet because the return flight is almost 100 euros! What a difference...so hopefully we find another alternative...apparently flying to Barcelona from London is pretty cheap, so we might just do that and get some really cheap train tickets from Barcelona to Malaga. Other than that, we've been finding some time to go to the beach since its been pretty sunny this week...although the whole having class from 10-2 everyday thing kind of takes away a huge part of your day :( ... read more

So I just got back from Sevilla for the weekend...I think it was definitely my favorite city here so far (although I do still like Malaga the best, haha). It was one of the most Spanish looking cities I've ever seen, with a lot of history and a huge cathedral in the middle of the city center that we got to tour. Yesterday was a little tiring because we met up quite early in the morning, and once we got there we did a lot of walking tours, one of them which included climbing a 37 flight tower in the cathedral to see Sevilla from up high. Luckily we got back to the hotel just in time for a hardcore siesta! We went out for dinner at night, and came back with plans to catch up ... read more
