Well let's see here...this week went by really fast again. Lisa and I have been busy making plans for Semana Santa, and after shopping around for a while, we decided to go with visiting London. We found some tickets off of ryanair that leave from Malaga for 15 euros, but haven't bought any tickets back yet because the return flight is almost 100 euros! What a difference...so hopefully we find another alternative...apparently flying to Barcelona from London is pretty cheap, so we might just do that and get some really cheap train tickets from Barcelona to Malaga.
Other than that, we've been finding some time to go to the beach since its been pretty sunny this week...although the whole having class from 10-2 everyday thing kind of takes away a huge part of your day 😞 Quite a few students have been cutting class to go to the beach or just leaving randomly during the school day, and its kind of entertaining because the professors clearly know but don't really seem to care. Especially since all we do in class lately is watch movies that serve as part of a "cultural experience" for us...haha.
Yesterday I was
planning on not going out and doing anything because we were supposed to go to the beach early this morning...but since I would feel like a bum for being in Spain and not doing anything at all on a Friday night, I thought I would meet up with some people and hang out for just a couple hours. Well a couple hours turned into way more than that...oops....we went to our favorite discoteca Cool because they were doing salsa lessons and our friend Ektor who works there ended up bribing us with free food and drinks so we ended up staying until close at 4. It was just Madison and I at first but we ended up meeting a ton of new people and it was actually really fun! We made friends with some people from London and a few random cities in Italy, and spent most of the time mocking each other's "accents". Getting back turned out to be interesting, because we kept getting followed by creepy people, but luckily we ran into someone we knew, and were able to travel in a bigger group with their friends...then somewhere down along the line I managed to get broken glass
in my shoe and didn't realize it until I stepped and noticed it was really painful. So, I got to sit on a bench for a while and dig it out of my foot, which was just looovely, and then still had to walk a mile back home. By that time it was such a relief to get back! I have never done so much walking in my life....Considering the fact it was almost 6 in the morning when I finally went to sleep, I was pretty excited about the fact that I woke up at 11:30 with no alarm!
I am becoming more and more amused with my host mom’s obsession with making sure that I am constantly eating more than enough at lunch and dinner. That’s one cultural difference don’t think I will ever get used to - apparently in Spain they like their kids to look well fed and if they don’t succeed or they start losing weight, they will freak out about it. Well I can definitely say that I know I’m healthy and even if I have been losing weight it has nothing to do with me not eating enough, but probably the
fact that I walk a ridiculous amount everyday. And on top of that, I’m sick of feeling so uncomfortably full after every meal, so I’ve finally stopped finishing her ridiculous proportions for 5738331 people so I don’t have to feel sick all the time from eating so much. Sometimes she looks at me like there’s something wrong with me and even purposely talks about how little I eat to other people in front of me because I think she wants me to feel self conscious about it. I usually have to try to beat her to lunch, otherwise she will put food on my plate for me, and it will be wayyyy too much and then she looks disappointed when I can’t finish the bazillion pounds of oiled up food she put out for me. Sometimes I swear she thinks there’s something wrong with my eating habits…well if there’s one thing I know about myself, it’s that I love eating and do it plenty of times, more so than a lot of people actually, and I most definitely am NOT at risk of starving myself in any means….I’ve been eating for 20 years now, and 2 of those years have
been without parental supervision, so I think I know how to feed myself enough to survive…thanks….
Other than that little cultural difficulty, I really like it here and am kind of bummed that I only have a little over a month left of the semester. These first two months have flown by, so I only imagine that this month will be even faster. I’ve really gotten to know a lot of good people and never imagined I would actually be able to create close friendships with foreign people. It’s nice to be able to walk around and not feel like a stranger, and sometimes I even run into people I know while walking places, which makes me feel even more at home. But, I am excited to get back into a normal routine and see everyone from home again when that time comes. I also just realized I have been here for over two months and my trip is officially over halfway over...WEIRD!
Tonight Lisa and I will be hanging out with some Spanish friends that live in Benalmadena, so we're pretty excited to actually hang out outside of Malaga for once! Not that we don't
love it here, but we're pretty much ALWAYS here...it'll be good to get some new scenery.
**SIESTA TIME!
