Check out v pohode, kluce sme hodili len do schranky. Do centra rk uz ideme autom. Pesia zona plna oproti veceru, ked nikde ani nohy. Davam klasicke ranajky, parizsky salat zapiti nic moc kapucinom. Farsky kostol sv.ondreja je asi jediny magnet pre turistov co sme tu objavili. Kostolik na kopci s fajn schodikmi ala zmensenina rybarskej basty v budapesti. No clovek potrebuje ozaj vela predstavivosti. Bus stanica je hned vedla vlakovej. Julia stresuje, ze svoj flixbus nevidi online v appke. Bus nakonec prichadza. Zistuje destinaciu, pri slove budapest len kyva rukou, no problem border. Rozlucka s fajn babou, trip sa mi lubil, dufam, ze aj jej a smer cez donovaly domov. Doma velmi zla sprava. Estonci poslali rakusanov na red list, takze ak by som odletel z viedne do tallinu, 14dnova karantena do v estonsku isti. ... read more

Kupujeme vstupenky, povinna dezinfekcia ruk, masky treba iba ak pojdeme do domcekov. Brigadnik nam dava mensi uvod do tohto skanzemu. Su ... read more

I'm standing in front of a tiny 4-table restaurant. The peeled log walls are candy-glazed with amber shellac. A civil defense loudspeaker, loosely screwed onto a corner of the roof, cranks out silly Slovakian Polka music that sounds like a Benny Hill soundtrack. In front of the cabin is a chicken-wire aviary. A couple of peacocks stretch their fans. On the ground inside the cage are a dozen flop-eared bunnies. They are all the same pepper-grey color. Huddled tightly together like trembling Tribbles under a withering Polka assault. Looks like a cake pan of furry biscuits ready for the oven. They're not here for show. Slovakians love bunny casserole. In the back, next to a churning, granite-clogged river are a few cable-spool tables. Chairs chain-sawed out of thick logs. Seats covered with wet AstroTurf. Two of ... read more

Tri roky ubehli a je to tu zase. Zachvaty stresu pri hladani roky nepotrebnych davno stratenych veci, z poslednych sil potlacana panika z neexistujuceho planu a temne uvahy nad tym kde budeme o tri dni. Preco? Pretoze nas caka dalsia cesta mimo nasu zapadnu civilizaciu. Tentoraz Vietnam a Kambodza. Stay tuned! No a este aby to nebolo cele az prilis jednoduche tak po zemetraseni v Peru a zaplavach v Indii nas tentoraz caka tajfun Haiyan o ktorom nase "we know the drama" televizie tvrdia ze je najsilnejsii v historii. Este ze mam siltovku, Kosto prsiplast a ... read more

We have to be out of our hotel room by 11am, which is not the earliest start we've had, but it’s early enough, especially as the bratwurst we had last night has been wrecking havoc on my poor digestive system. I knew there was a reason we weren't friends, but the vast amount of beer washed down with it can't have helped much either. We've no food in for breakfast again, so have to make do with a tin of peaches (from our food bag) eaten by hand of course as we have no cutlery. To spice things up we add the luxury addition of a yoghurt drink. At least we should be on budget for food! I decide it’s my turn to take over the driving for this part of the trip and Greg will ... read more

After a great time in Bratislava it was time to once again pack the car and head off to our next destination, a one night stop in a small village near Liptovsky Mikuláš. Today’s trip should take us through some very scenic and sometimes interesting countryside. Our first stop was the very large Tesco Extra Hypermarket for some lunch supplies. Tesco seems to have a huge presence in this part of the world and there are quite a number of reasonably new premises. To get to our intended route we needed to retrace our steps along the 30 kilometres of concrete road. One day someone is going to realise this road is not good and needs instant replacement. But then again the Ministry of Roads probably have shares in the suspension and shock absorber industry. There ... read more

Today has been emotional, to say the least. It started out with a trip to Orava Castle, an absolutely beautiful castle/palace built on a hill in the Orava region, bits dating back as far as the 13th century, and still fairly intact. It was another sort of museum where you followed a guide around from room to room, without being able to wander freely, but I can certainly see why in this case. Not so much to protect from theft or anything as to prevent people from getting lost (the place is huge!) or hurt (there are still open archaeological excavations on site). Not only that, but it was raining, and wood and stone have a tendency to get slippery when wet. Next we ventured on to Podbiel, and stopped at the town hall. The travel ... read more

Started the morning by heading out to Pustý Hrad ("deserted castle") just outside Zvolen this a.m. Ruins of a castle that's been around since Roman times. The catch? An uphill climb. A change in elevation of more than 200 m (yeah, I know that's not that huge, but it's well bigger than anything we've got in Edmonton). It was a hike. And I mean a real hike. If we'd managed to stick to the path it probably wouldn't have been such a hike, but at some point we ended up losing it and more or less scrambling up the hill until we found it again. It was pretty fun, actually. If I ever come back here, I may have to try some more hiking and general outdoorsy-ness. Totally worth the climb (which took about 35 minutes ... read more

Our arrival to Slovakia and the pursuing midnight prowl through a towering, decaying sídliště to find the only cheap accommodation which existed in Košice, and the lack of sleep I got, is one of those things which is just best left at a quick description. Should any philosophy MA students wish to write a thesis titled "The emotional equivalent of carving through your midriff with a circular saw", then contact me and I will provide a detailed play by play description. Let me just say that I was extremely glad to have Jitka with me. I set off alone after having vaguely recovered from it all. Walking through Košice to the station in the morning, I felt myself able to find appreciation in the little things like the churches and fountains, that there was a band ... read more
