It was another checkout day today (they seem to come round so quick) so after brekkie we packed up, paid our debts and said goodbye to Steph and our Korean roomies (first and last words as they kept to themselves). Today we are leaving Vienna heading across to Bratislava for the day and then finally on to Budapest. With only a little bit of stress, (the journey took longer than expected) we tubed across to Wien HBF and caught the 1h train to Bratislava. Once we had struggled to dump our bags in the automated storage lockers at Bratislava station, due to the machines only taking coins and requiring a specific coinage, next up was struggling to get a city map, transport map, ticket for the correct zones and duration and most importantly, correct bus. Today we woke up in Bratislava. We had breakfast and then met our local guide, Martin, a young man who had us laughing right away. He knew his history well as did all of our local guides so far. We have really been impressed. The sun was shining as it has been all week with nary a cloud in the sky. We can tell that it is getting warmer the closer we get to Budapest, but there is no humidity and today there was a nice breeze. Bratislava is a mix of modern and Baroque architecture. The capital city is among the youngest in Europe, yet retains a rich history dating back more than 2000 years. We walked along the cobblestone lanes of this historic town center, viewed St. Martin's Cathedral, coronation site of he Kings ... read more

I take an early train from Munich to Bratislava via Vienna. I have not ever been to Bratislava, and I was excited about the opportunity to explore somewhere new. When I arrive at the train station, I had to find the bus stop for bus 93 which would take me very near my hostel. After walking a few minutes, I realize I am on the wrong side of the road, so I hurry to the other side, purchase my bus ticket, and await for the bus to come. I was pretty excited when I saw the correct number of the bus coming my way. I enter the bus, validate my ticket, and off we go. As I only had to go to the second stop, the ride was very quick. I am glad, for I certainly ... read more

We woke up late, so packing wasn’t as stress free as I would’ve hoped for, however we discovered that we actually can organise ourselves in a little bit over an hour, that is with all three of us taking shower, Millie having a full breakfast and packing. Not too bad at all I guess, still next time a slightly earlier wake up call for sure! When we got to the station we even had 20 minutes to spare! Just about enough time to say good-bye to the High Tatras... Who would’ve thought? You could actually see them in their full glory that morning, better late than never I guess! As I suspected, just like in Poland, the train we were taking had carriages within the carriages... Fortunately there were 6 seats in the cabin rather than ... read more

Today we journeyed east from Vienna on a 90 minute excursion by ship on the Danube to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. It meant giving up the day to see museums in Vienna in order to explore a once highly significant administrative center of the Hapsburg monarchy, and a once fascinating location for a deeply entrenched Jewish community in the urban center and its environs that was known until 1919 as Pressburg by most people. This blog will be shorter than previous ones, not because Bratislava called forth fewer ideas and emotions, but possibly even more. Rather, it was a 10 hour day and I'm beat. Suffice it to say that the first time the city came to my attention was back in 1999 when I took a course a history course at JTS on the ... read more

Bratislava has been a whistle stop tour, with me leaving tomorrow for Budapest, however I'm so glad I got to see it. It's been a really fun afternoon of mixed weather, historic sites, cobbled streets, a lesson in Pharmacy, a protest against Islamic Rights on National Refugee Day and an Alien invasion in the form of a UFO. Let me explain. The historic 'Old Town' is where I'm based and again, I have lucked out on the accommodation. I am doing AirBnB and my room is really lovely and looks out onto the Blue Church. It therefore made perfect sense after a freshen up (it was needed after PT (public transport) for 4 hours) that I took to the streets again. That sounds so wrong, but you know what I mean. :) It is everything an ... read more

Of all the places I expected to be on this trip, this has got to be the unexpected of the unexpected. I had no intention of going to Slovakia on this trip, other than maybe sleeping through it on the night train I had booked for right now between Budapest and Poland. But things change, and that's great. This is my 2nd time in Bratislava, but the first time was only about 6 hours one day while I was staying in Vienna. This time, I get to experience more than just a meal and a few of the highlights. Already, I've enjoyed myself immensely! The train ride was smooth. I couldn't believe it, though I did make sure to catch the train that was going all the way to Berlin. I figured if the Germans were ... read more

Bratislava is the only national capital that's close to the borders of two other countries. Fitting this setup, we came here from Austria today (9/12) and will be in Hungary tomorrow night (9/13). So, wanting to be sure that we post at least once from every country we are visiing, here are some photos from our one-night stay in Bratislava. Between Vienna and Bratislava we expected to be passing through industrial and urban landscapes, but that was not the case at all. Instead, much of the Danube's shore and side channel area has been preserved and is a national park through which we pedaled for most of the day on a nice trail on top of the dike. The bridge at the last river crossing in Austria is at a site where construction of a dam ... read more

So the decision to come here happened a little over a year ago, it’s one that I’ve continually questioned, but, as has been the norm of my life since that first BIG trip to South America, seven years ago, I’ve tried to go with the flow and make the most of the situations and the people which I find myself with – you often get asked two questions, in either order, but both accompanied with the vague expression of WTF… a) where is Bratislava? And 2) Why are you going?!!! (Cue inane laughter and the distant loony-bin sirens drawing closer…) Well, 9 months in and I’ve started pretending that I moved here at Christmas; my limited amount of Slovak is embarrassing – I really am better of in thai!!! I can ‘ahoy’(but still without murmuring 'sailor' ... read more

Since some viewers of our blog have asked about the photo Nancy put up earlier today, I will post it again along with it's story. In the literature our room at the Hotel Michalská Brána there was a description of the life of the man in the photo whose real name was Ignác Lamar, nicknamed Schöner Naci. The receptionist was kind enough to make a copy of the short article about him. I have changed a few words for clarity. Here is his story: He was called Schöner Naci or Handsome Naci During a stroll through Bratislava, visitors like to take photographs of the statue of Schöner Naci tilting his hat in greeting. On our first visit to Bratislava we saw the statue and did not realize that it was of a real man who lived ... read more
