August 19th-Today we enjoyed our Slovakian Breakfast at the Park Inn on the Danube. The breakfast spread was very extensive and we both enjoyed the chocolate dip for the croissants. After breakfast, we headed straight for the New Bridge UFO lookout. This bridge was constructed during Communist times. They displaced several hundred homes in the Jewish quarter to put in a major highway.... the only problem is that they ran it right in front of the St.Martin's Cathedral, a  Coronation Church for the Slovakian Kings.... which is now crumbling because of the vibration of the highway. The UFO lookout is a restaurant and a overlook on the city. At the top we got wonderful views of the castle, the old town, and new section of Bratislava. Also from this height, we could see Austria, Hungary, and ... read more

August 18th- We started off the day fairly early.... I was up and got myself down to the lobby before 8 in order to get connected to the interet. I got myself setup and checked my email and then headed back to our room to shower before breakfast. Breakfast was a very nice spread... we especially like the croissants. Eileen loved the scrambled eggs. We ate a big breakfast and then gathered our things and headed to the Bratislava Castle. This castle was fairly close to our hotel but it was a steep climb to get there. The castle was pretty cool. It is white and it currently under re-construction. We didn't pay to go in because most of the castle was not open, but we did wander around the grounds and got a feel for ... read more

August 16-17-Our flight left syracuse at 4pm and we headed for Boston. there was nothing spectacular about the flight. once in Boston, we grabbed a bite to eat and made our way to the gate. The international terminal in Boston is quite posh and I enjoyed the access to a plug to charge my "Electronic toys" as my mom would call them. We boarded our next flight to Munich on Lufthansa airlines. The plane was very nice and included a "downstairs" area that was primarily for restrooms. Each of our seats had our own TV, and I was tempted to watch a movie in German just to prepare myself. The stewardesses were generally nice, except the one who was stationed to our area... she was very short with us. I have to say the service was ... read more

On advice from our friendly hotel receptionist, we set out this morning to take the tram into the city to explore Bratislava’s old town. Tram tickets could be purchased from a machine at the next tram stop but one, a mere 5 minutes walk away. The walk over, we realised there was no ticket machine at the tram stop, so approached a young man who luckily spoke some English. He was unsure where we might find a ticket machine, but suggested asking at the petrol station across the road. He then insisted on taking us over and asking the attendant on our behalf (in Slovakian). The gist of the response was that vandals ruin the machines at some tram stops so they are located away from the stops, in this case the lady thought we should ... read more

I forgot that I had taken some snaps on the small camera of the trip down the Donau/Danube on that Twin City Liner cat or whatever it is called. Somewhat like my pictures of the Rhine last year if you remember in terms of the odd riverside rocky castle etc. And even though I got to Bratislava tp spend two nights there, with the view to getting around to see a bit, this did not really prove the case in the end. Woke up and it was raining and as I could look down on the roof 3 floors below I could tell how wet it was. So decided at almost 4pm (rain can ruin the best of holidays) that best thing to do was stay dry and go to the Slovakian National Gallery next door. ... read more

To many American ears the words Bratislava, Slovakia sound none too inviting and possibly even harsh. Perhaps it is the word 'brat' which has such negative connotations to it as in " Whew! I'm glad that little brat isn't MY kid". Or maybe it is the 'slov' in Slovakia that sounds, well, trampy or slovenly. On the day we left Budapest on a 10 hour trek by bus to Prague I didn't know what to expect. Only the night before I had learned we would be stopping in Bratislava for lunch. Great, I thought, that adds another country to the already packed list for this trip. Slovakia is small, about the size of W. Virginia. with a population of 5.4 million. Most of it is mountainous (the Tatras) except for the area around the Danube which ... read more

I took the trip to Bratislava with my Canadian friends hoping to watch the semi finals of the world hockey championships. That plan went down in flames when the Russians knocked out the Canadians in the quarter finals as we arrived on the Thursday night. That ensures that we hit up the pubs for them to console the fact that we won't be going to the hockey. The night life in Bratislava is buzzing. Many stag parties and many hockey fans chant on the streets and we find a sports bar to sit outside on the balmy evening where topless barmaids serve Russian groups vodka. The Russians all wear the oversized hockey shirts that still don't cover up their massive guys and man boobs that outsize the barmaids. We enjoy plenty of cheap pints and forget ... read more

Hi all, renton here. My turn to enthrall you with our explots from eurotour 2010/2011. To usher in the new year we left vienna and travelled to the luxury resort of bratislava slovakia. While this concrete metropolis envokes feelings of suicide its accually not to bad a place. Upon arriving at the campsite we found it was closed as you can see from the photo it was a litle chilly, so alternate accomadation had to be sourced. We were lucky enough to find an original cold war, one star motel with all the mod cons, fixed lighting that had to be plugged in and the windows that opened all the way (11 floors up). see attached photo for the aerial view of the faithful europig (magestic). We quickly set off for a walking tour of the ... read more

Bratislava, Slovakia Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is only 60 km from Vienna. The fertile country is flatter and is part of the Hungarian Plains. Farming still seems to be of the strip type. The EU dictates what the farmers are to grow, but they don't seem to hear the instructions. There are very many wind turbines - Beth estimated about 300 in one "farm". Our entry was over the New Bridge, built between 1967 and 1972 but the restaurant on top was not opened until 2005 because it gave great views of non communist Austria. Nearby was the monument to the victory over the plague and the monument to the 105,000 victims of the holocaust. The Synagogue was demolished to make way for the highway. We entered the old city through Michael's Gate. In a ... read more

Day 15-Budapest to Prague 8/31/10-Tuesday Want to know our weather? No you don’t. We had rain and cold today. You’ll see in the photos. We wound down our cruise today. Last night we had a nice cruise around Budapest on the Danube. We would have been happy to have a few more days here but we are excited about the next stop, Prague. The trip north was on a motor coach. There were about 35 people from the ship that were joining the final leg of our trip to Prague. The scenery was interesting but nothing unusual except for a large number of wind turbines. On the way to Prague we made a stop in our sixth nation, Slovakia. We stopped in Bratislava, the capital city. It is a city of about 430,000 people on the ... read more
