Day 10 -11 (April 14-15) We head off in a private bus without staying in Irkutsk and go straight to our guest house in Listvyanka. Breakfast was waiting, wonderful sweet cottage cheese things, pancakes, bread and cheese and meets, porridge and juice and coffee. Fantastic food, and a ideal place to stay. It is not too cold only -2. with our warm gear on we head out for a walk in the surrounding hills. A circuit involving some steep and slippery parts up and down brings us back a spot overlooking the township where we can see the frozen lake - which is the largest by volume in the world holding one fifth of the worlds fresh water. We then walk into town and obtain some roubles. I learn that when ordering a sandwich in Russia ... read more

Hi again, it's convenient that it gets dark and cold so early here- gives me plenty of time to write blog entries. Thanks for all your comments and messages. We've just got back to Irkutsk after having a few days at Lake Baikal. Baikal is the biggest (volume) lake in the world and holds something like 20% of the planet's freshwater. Apparently it's on a fault line which is continually growing so the lake will eventually become an ocean. We took a bus there from Irkutsk that takes about 90mins on one snowy road that goes up and down hills all the way. We were headed for Listvyanka a little village on the lake-shore. The approach to the village was amazing- we could just see the massive expanse of the lake with huge snowy mountains on ... read more

Km travelled 10344 19.10.08 Our arrival at Jack's hostel has been an easy one, and comfortable. We've been soon caught by a young girl, also a guest (and please don't make any comment on the fact that she was a kiwi as well!) that drowned us into words for a while. This morning we're ready at 10.00 when Jack comes to pick us up and start our great tour to Lake Baikal. We're both dead tired but we're going to have some amazing time. Jack seems a nice guy and driving for almost five hours is a good chance to have a chat. As we get outside Irkutsk we're surrounded by yellow fields dotted with cows, and hills behind with lines of trees that look like brushes. It's really beautiful. We stop for lunch at a ... read more

So having spent the past 4 nights on the train....we weren't exactly smelling of roses! We were really really looking forward to a hot shower.....so when we were told there would be no shower where we were staying....our jaws droppped & we all looked at each other thinking 'what the ....' Little did we realise that we were getting SOO much more than an electric shower......... We had signed up to stay with a Russian family in a traditional log cabin in the beautiful village of Listvyanka! Being traditional meant there was no running water. So our toilet was in a little hut at the end of the garden....lovely when you have to pee at 4am......up outta bed.....jacket & shoes on...slipping like an idiot over the icy pathy way leading to the hut!!! Ha....it was comical! ... read more

Ohhh sooo tired. I am sure if we had the choice - Tim and I would have spent the day in bed. But as always - check out time is in 15 minutes and today is probably the only chance we'll ever have to see the world's largest lake - Lake Baikal. We made it to the drab and dingy bus station, and knowing full well that we had already missed the 8am and 9am bus, we attempted a cab ride, which some out of date blogs told us would only cost $15-$25. Inflation hits this place hard - as the best we got was 1100 R - ONE WAY (about $50.00) - so "NYET" to that. Armed with the town LYSTVYANKA written in Cyrillic in a scrap of paper, I braved the ticket office, and ... read more

We are in Irkust now, more than half way through our Trans-Siberian journey. Train life is great. We are catching another train tonight to Ulan Bator. Over the past 4 nights we have played lots of cards, lost and won loads of small money and drank some vodka - of course. The cabins are 4-berth and quite spacious, although we all needed a shower! Stopping at stations is a lot of fun. We can get off for 15 minutes or so and buy some goodies from the old ladies who come down to meet the train. We are getting more and more adventurous with the food we are trying, which will undoubtedly lead to food poisoning! We visited lake Baikal for two days. It was beautiful there, the largest fresh water lake in the world. I ... read more

As in the previous post I’m writing not in the place I am writing about, I’m now in Ulan Ude (see map) and so most of this is my journal edited…tripped out a little in this space and time so please expect stories that have been markedly marked with crayons… Thursday 07/08/08 So as you can see from the previous pic (Note: I’m talking to myself here and about the Lake Baikal sketch that is on the previous page - see pics when I can upload) I am at Lake Baikal and have only now written…why? Maybe I have too much to say - my mind here has been so alive that I’ve really had no opportunity to sit down, stop thinking and write - the reason now really is to chart this glorious time ... read more

This is not our problem“! Ta den Dimitri, der er vores lokale rejsearrangoer, og det goer han saa ogsaa og lover at „there is no problem“ selvom han faar stryg af vores buschauffoer. Det er en 6 timers koeretur med bussen over oede landskaber med masser af koer paa vejene og en rasteplads der ligner noget fra et slumkvarter i Calcutta. Her har jeg mit livs toiletoplevelse. ... read more
