We spent few days on Olchon island. We took a bus there. It was raining all the time that day, and unfortunately in the bus too :) There one lady had an umbrella, one other was sitting in the raincoat .... First night we spent in one shelter, with other 3 Slovak guys we met. They are travelling from Kyrgyzstan (through Kazachstan) and they plan to go to Kamchatka. The island is very beautiful, I mean the landscape, cliffs, lake itself. Otherwise the tourism just starts to boom, since 2 years they have electricity. The few villages there still do not have any roads with solid surface. So you can imagine how it looked like after heavy rains. But people there have good "off road" cars - UAZ. Russian car. I doubt some other car would ... read more

Hi All. First the legal part: "Ailsa Katherine Hart, herein after known as Ailsa, wishes it to be made clear that at no time past, during or future has her name ever been connected with the word laxative in a public blog. Ailsa wishes it to be known that any further suggestions of this type will result in a court action." Right! That's that then!!! So Siberia. Well we had a fantastic day to arrive after a longish journey. The eleven hour border change between Russia and Mongolia is a bit epic. We were staying at a lovely homestay (B&B) with the lovely Tamara cooking for us. The toilet involved a good walk into the garden for a long drop toilet which Catriona was in mortal terror of! We had a banya at the house so ... read more

Free time this morning, check-out was at 12 and we had to meet in the lobby at 2pm to get the bus to the train station. We wandered around town, went to the internet café to check the emails and got a few supplies for the train trip. One unusual thing about Irkutsk is that there are many old wooden houses in the city that apparently have no running water, there are wells with pump handles at various places on the sidewalk and the occupants collect their water from there. There can’t be too many though as we never saw anyone at the pumps we passed. We left the hotel at about 3 to catch our 4.30 train, it wasn’t very far but Sergay was worried about the traffic. As it turned out the traffic was ... read more

Another beautiful day in Listvyanka, unfortunately we were leaving. After breakfast we were back on the bus heading back to Irkutsk and we were stopping off at the Open Air Wood Museum which was a re-creation of the typical houses and villages from the early Evenks (similar to the North American Indians) through to the Buryats from Mongolia and the Russians during the 1800’s - 1900’s. They made their houses from solid logs as you would expect and in later years some of the woodwork was quite ornate and intricate. They were also into glassworks both for windows and to make bottles to carry their vodka. Once again Sergay talked at length about all the exhibits. Back on the bus and back to Hotel Irkutsk where we checked in and took our bags to our rooms. ... read more

Once again there was thunder and lightning and rain overnight but by the morning the rain had stopped. Unfortunately it was still overcast and threatening rain but that was ok, after breakfast we jumped on the bus and took a short trip up the road to the local Ecological Museum. Sergay talked at length about the lake, it’s history, the fish life, the seals, the lake, the fish life, the history,….. he is very passionate about lake Baikal. During the war before the connection between Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude was completed on the Trans-Siberian railway they even pushed railway carriages across the lake, they tried to pull them with an engine but it was too heavy so they dismantled it and took it across in bits in the carriages and reassembled it on the other side. The ... read more

Cereal in a cup for breakfast again before arriving at Irkutsk, the capital of Siberia, at around 8 am. We were met on the platform by our new guide Sergay who carefully ushered us out to our bus and our new driver Sergay (yes, they were both Sergay). We were driven to our hotel just so we could exchange some cash before heading out to the lakeside town of Listvyanka 70 km away where we would be staying for the next 2 nights. We headed out on the Eisenhauer Road (which was originally built for a visit by the then US President who actually never got to use it due to a falling out between governments - Sergay is so full of information!) and stopped at the mouth of the Angara River, the only river flowing ... read more

Hi All, I can't believe it's been 8 days since my last post. We've done so much in the last week - I'm dreading how long it's going to take to write this blog (it doesn't matter now as its only costs 50 cent an hour here compared to 10 Euro in Siberia, that's why it has taken 8 days to update). We boarded the train in Moscow and were excited/nervous about being couped up in a small cabin for nearly 4 days straight, we needn't have worried, as we quickly opened up an Irish Pub in our dainty cabin and for most of the 4 days it was home to 8 -- 12 drunks, much to the annoyance of our carriage attendant. Maeve did up a sign which we hung up, it announced we were ... read more

We arrived into Irkutsk at 06.03am exactly as stated on our tickets. We were met by a lady called Tatiana who was very softly spoken and rather sleepy looking. We pulled up outside our homestay and Tatiana got on her phone looking pretty confused. Turned out that our homestay had been given the wrong dates and were actually out of town in their country Dacha. After a few hasty phonecalls we were taken to another place that turned out to be a shared apartment with two german ladies and two australian girls. Tatiana sat us on the sofa and introduced us to the apartment owner, who had been rudely awoken and still in her flowing pink night gown and matching pink lipstick. Tatiana said that the owner is partially deaf and speaks only Russian and German. ... read more

(Day 55 on the road)The trip to Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal got off to a bad start: After a smooth 4h minibus-ride through some snow-covered roads and forests to the ferry which was supposed to bring us to the island, we found out that the ferry was cancelled due to strong winds. And windy it was - I have never experienced anything like it. We were ten people sitting in the van, and the car was being moved back and forth by the storm. In the end, we waited eight long hours in the bus (it was way too cold and windy to stay outside the bus for any amount of time), before the storm finally settled and the ferry took us across. So what should have been a 4h tour became a 12h torture... ... read more
