Florian and I manage to scramble out of bed early after a late night of rowdy behaviour. We walk over to the bus station which is about an a fourty five minute walk and arrive at a scene of chaos. Lonneke is in tears at the bus counter and quickly grabs me to come and talk to the Russian lady behind the counter. i am not sure what is going on or what my limited Russian can do but it seems that Lonneke met two Koreans from our Hostel who were going to Olkhon Island by bus today and had bought their tickets. Lonneke had taken one of the tickets and asked the lady to have another ticket for tomorrow for her to go to the island. But in anglo-russian confusion the lady had thought that ... read more

So I went to Listvyanka yesterday and spent a good 3 hours walking around searching for accommodation. It seemed like it was a ghost town. I was the only tourist in sight and all the suggested accommodations in the Lonely Planet were closed or out of sight. This 60 year old Russian man stopped his van as I was reading the only sign in the town with English (which was advertising a shop and rooms) and said to me: "This is my sign, stay my rooms" Then pointed up the hill, so I was thinking this looks hopeful and walked up the hill. To say the least the area was not tourist friendly. I found his shop, but the woman in it pointed me further up the hill away from the lake. There were only shanties ... read more

So, as we pondered the connection between our two new 'cabin buddies', the train sped on through Siberia. By this time we had reached Lake Baikal, a huge body of water in the region of Irkutsk. We spent most of the second day passing the expanse of frozen, snow-covered water to the north, projecting far beyond the white horizon. On the other side- in the the direction of the Northern borders of Mongolia, North West China and Kazakstan- a long range of snowy mountains, met the sky. It was an impressive sight. We passed the day then by playing cards, taking naps, reading and writing. Together with our Canadian friend Steve, we sat for a few hours playing cards in the empty, smoke-soaked restaurant carriage, which was patrolled by a surly, lethargic waiter, whose right ... read more

Part 2: Juke box in Siberia The train journey from Ulan Ude was another overnighter - only about 10 hours though and we were expecting to arrive at around 8am at our destination: Irkutsk (pron: ear-kootsk - and don't forget to roll your R's). No smugglers on this train that we were aware of but we gave the provodnista a good laugh when we told her we didn't need bed linen as we had sleeping bags. She found this quite hilarious and threw the linen onto one of the bunks and marched off to the next cabin. Back-packers are funny! This train was probably what you'd expect a Russian train to be. A bit noisy, a bit daggy, a bit uncomfortable, a lot wood paneled - basically rather past it's 'best before' date. At one stage ... read more

Again another lye-in, at this rate I am never going to see this effin lake. The owner came to my rescue though, he offered to take me on a personal tour for 1500 roubles (about 30 quid), at first I said no but then I thought what the hell, it makes it easier, it was expensive but he offered me the same tour for 2500 when I arrived, I think he wasn't doing much. It is expensive being on your own sometimes. Anyway we drove the 60km to Listvyanka village (which in itself sucks arse) but I must admit the lake was fantastic, I didn’t know what to expect but it was frozen, you were no longer allowed drive on it as it was thawing but you could walk on it (which I did), weird and ... read more

After a very long day in Ekaterinburg waiting patiently for our late night train we were finally off at 2am on what is to be our longest train leg of our journey (50hrs). We were both happy and a little sad to find we had only one travel companion in our berth, who happened to turn out to be the quietest man in Russia (so much for vodka induced wild train trips) , slept most of the way and seemed to eat nothing. Oh, he also had some pretty nasty BO going on to boot which matured as our journey progressed! Despite this he seemed very nice. Anyway the trip was surprisingly not too painful and we managed to not get too much cabin fever aided by the few books, games and cards we have brought ... read more

January 31, 2008 10,000 Miles !!!!! We are in a small town on the northern edge of Lake Baikal. With a depth of 5,371 ft. it is the deepest freshwater lake in the world, and it is frozen solid. Not quite solid enough the locals say to get across it by jeep to a set of hot springs on the other side but if we stayed a few more weeks it would be - maybe next time. Lake Baikal is not only the deepest freshwater lake in the world but also the largest, holding about 20% of the world’s total supply of freshwater! It is very cold here - 28 below at night here, Celsius (that’s about -19 Fahrenheit). Of course in the sun during the day it warms up to a balmy 8-10 below Celsius. ... read more

From my journal... After an uneventful and smelly journey on the train I devoured the book "Day of the Jackal" (for lack of any other entertainment than torturing Ross) and made fun of typical Russian style/behavior at train stops. (more on that later) Being the intellectual, college educated individuals we are, Ross and I spent my remaining turgut (Mongolian money) on apples, grapes, tea, bad coffee and beer, and therefore had nothing substantial to eat for two days. Tom, a fellow traveler and former JET, happened to be sharing our car and managed to coax some rubles from a cash machine. With this in hand he bought us some pity hotdogs and an onion roll. Eating my portion (all of it for a change) helped pass the time, but I was acutely aware of the longing ... read more
