Another 9am start, breakfast at Zoom Zoom, and we made our way to the underground railway. I've never travelled so deep on an escalator, the ride taking a good 5 minutes. Were designed in 1810 to be used as lighthouses and operated with oil lights. They are decorated with the bows of ships to represent naval victories which is a very Roman style. They still operate on gas and are lit for ceremonial occasions these days.

Escalators

It must be remembered that St. Petersburg lies on the banks of Neva River, closely to the Bay of Finland, and on many islands. That means there is water everywhere, so the stations are deep not because of the atom, but because of geological features. Thanks!)

Thanks for the correction. I did read somewhere that St Petersburg was on a wetland and has so many canals, partly to keep the water flowing to the Neva. Google is only as good as the info inserted, thanks again.
