We were all sad to leave Eldorado camping, a lovely site with great facilities including use of the lake and the pool all for under £10.00 GBP. Setting out we knew it was going to be a long drive and with Woolly clutching his bulb of garlic we were off. Woolly says – it’s better to be safe than sorry I say, we’re in Dracula country and getting ever closer to his lair. Once the city was behind us Ollie was in his element racing along the roads with very little traffic to annoy him. The scenery was ever changing and as we wound round each corner we were met with ever more spectacular views. The towns continued to fascinate us and I set Jo a challenge of taking a picture of the many horse and ... read more

The jury was still out on Romania after the 2010 trip to Bucharest. As described in Red Dogs & Englishmen and the very worthwhile book on all things football in Eastern Europe, Romania is not a very easy country to like - a cross between the appalling and the appealing. The five days in Bucharest elevated it’s status in our minds, so we thought we’d give it another go for the "special occasion". There would be no football this time anyway to bring us into contact with the less sophisticated members of society and the Henri Coanda Airport at Otopeni is a step up in class from the less than luxurious cousin down the road at Banesa. The EU funds had been well spent and the bag pick up was swift and efficient. Terminal 4 had ... read more

We probably should have had another day for sightseeing in Bucharest as there were some places we didn’t get to but we don’t think we could have put up with the excuse for a bed that we had at Hotel Ancor. The room was large and all the other facilities were excellent but the bed was a shocker with absolutely no give in it. Upon inspection we discovered it was in reality a bed base and a thin topper pad made from material which gave hardly any softness to the surface we slept on. The bed was voted ‘first equal worst’ with the one we had in Sarajevo and will be reported as such in our Trip Advisor review. We should have complained after the first night and so it was really our own fault to put ... read more

We landed to a rapturous applause by passangers as the shifty-looking Wizzair plane bounced off the runway at Targu-Mures municipal airfield. Emblazoned proudly on the side of the terminal are the words 'Transilvania Airport'. I feel rather cheated, having believed there is a 'y' involved. Bram Stoker, the Irish gothic writer, envisioned a medieval wild-west, inhabited by the vampire Dracula, Van Helsing, and all kinds of ludicrous creatures. Transylvania looks vast, dark and overpowering in much the same way today, except with more car dealerships. Many more. With a group of six other teachers, we wait for another who hasn't come through arrivals. We later learn that he missed his flight entirely. Our driver from the airport only speaks when pointing out the odd prostitute (alleged) walking by the side of the road. That, and likening ... read more

I was up at 7, feeling quite good -- considering how many empty wine bottles are in the kitchen. Short yoga routine, then breakfast, then shower, then got organized for our first day trip. We met Florin outside at 8:30; we had a surprise guest along for our tour. She was a very quiet young woman from Japan. Sadly, none of us can remember her name. The car is a smallish car but with a third row of seats. The Japanese girl was in the front passenger seat, three of us in the regular back seat, and one in the “back back”. Quite cozy. Today's tour is the “three castle tour”. We drove through a few small Saxon villages, and Florin explained how to differentiate the Saxon buildings and the Romanian buildings. Saxon buildings have a ... read more

7/26/09 Austin: It has been awhile since we last blogged, and we have a lot to update on. We have been traveling through Romania for the last two weeks. We went to the Transylvania Alps, near Sinaia, and braved the weather to hike to the top in very windy conditions. We also spent a night in a freezing cold Cabana at the top of the mountain. The views are beyond words in the beauty of flat topped mountains at about one mile high. ----- We saw the most extravagant castle so far called Peles Castle. It use to be owned by the King of Romania. It has many fancy designs in the wood work and structure. The art was priceless. His collection of weapons is the largest in Romania. ----- We went to Dracula’s Castle in ... read more

Decided it was high time to go home, relax and clear up my thoughts after a very traumatic experience. Mom and Dad were amazing and took me out and about to gorgeous places in Romania, places that I can remember only from my childhood when we used to travel quite a lot in summer as a family, and later on with friends. I enjoyed the awe-inspiring landscapes and loved re-visiting Bran Castle, one of the most famous castles in Europe where the legend places the terrifying figure of Darcula. SINAIA is a gem in the Romanian Carpathians, undoubtelly incomparable to any other touristic spots in Europe! I loved the landsapes though it gets really cold in the mountains, where we reached the altitude of 2000m high . Amazing view, but freezing cold!! ... read more
