Rasfat as putea spune pe Valea Prahovei. La ... read more

This wasn't actually a trip, because I went there for work. I went there twice, on two consecutive days, but I only drove the second time (when I went alone). Of course, when I went alone I managed to get lost through Ploiesti (on the way back)... Total distance: 157 km.... read more

Another one day trip, but this time on a Sunday. The first stop was the Slanic Prahova salt mine, a nice place, but with a large queue... Inside the mine it was quite quiet and you could play ping pong for a small fee (which we did). After leaving the mine we stopped at a nearby restaurant. The next stop on the road was the Zamfira monastery, painted by Nicolae Grigorescu. It was small, but it looked nice, especially since it hosted a lovely cat in its yard. There was also a sign pointing towards a roman castrum so we went there, but the place hadn't been set up just yet. The ruins were covered in plastic foil and there was not much to be seen. However, the stop wasn't for nothing, because a local boy ... read more

After many meetings, much preparation, three flights (one being 11 hours from Salt Lake City to Paris) and 3 movies, we finally made it to Romania. After going through customs and claiming all but one of our 20 bags, the 15 of us (12 University of Idaho Students and 3 advisers) were ready to leave Bucharest and be on our way to Valea Screzii, a village about an hour and a half away. Well, things didn’t quite go as planned once we realized that one of the guys on our 15 person team had left his passport on the airplane and was now being held in limbo in the Bucharest airport. Hmmmmm. After waiting for five extra hours on the airport floor, we decided to leave one of our advisers in Bucharest to wait for the ... read more

Sinaia day 10-11 (June 16-17) Our train was running late, but finally it arrived and we headed off on an hour and half’s journey to a mountain resort town of Sinaia. We were warned that hiking here should only be done with a guide due to the prevalence of bears. Romania has the largest population of bear and wolves in Europe. The weather was wet again but undeterred we headed up the hills in the rain to visit the local monastery and a renowned castle. The castle was built relatively recently in terms of castles and had been furnished rather ornately with wood carvings and Venetian coloured crystal. The nearby winter residence was much more tasteful in a more art nuveau style. Dinner that night was at a restaurant near the top of the mountain. On ... read more

Hi guys, long time no see! Well what about last weekend? Did I ever said NO to a mountain trip invitation? So let’s summarize: last Friday I resigned my current job! After a quick gathering with some friends we all agreed I need to get out of the city and relax my mind after such stressful decision. Its end of May and the mountain area is best get away! Saturday at 7 o’clock in the morning we all were in front of train line No 9 waiting the ride to Busteni. I havent slept all night but I hardly waited to get there. After a 3 hours journey here we are! The air is so fresh, people r soooo calm and the sun is shining! The weather forecast man said that it will be cloudy - ... read more

My parents are spoiling me rotten! And in all honesty, nobody can get tired of being pampered and having every whim indulged! PelesCastle is unquestinably one of the most beautiful castles in Romania, in the middle of a very picturesque landscape, surrounded by mountains. We had a short visit to the famous castle which was packed with Romanian and foreign tourists. ... read more

I have a lot of moments here which make me feel happy to be alive - perhaps it's the natural beauty of the place, the genuine people I come into contact with or just simply doing something I enjoy in life. I have completely enjoyed watching the seasons change here too - the colours of autumn were awesome (we miss out on those in tropical Queensland!) and now we have had our first real heavy snow fall the place has been transformed into a true winter wonderland - thought you might like some of the photos! I also have a lot of moments that make me chuckle, and there is never a shortage of chuckles when I have to interact with shopkeepers! In the past couple of years Romania decided to simplify its currency and delete ... read more

I was greeted by a small Romanian clan from Pro Vita (the organisation I am volunteering for) - Mel, Mihail and Janet (Mel's English aunt) at the airport, an enthusiastic reception despite the late hour (almost midnight) as my flight was delayed by over an hour. At the car I am met immediately with Mihail booming out to me "NO NO NO, DONT TOUCH THE BOOT OF THE CAR!!" - it apparently fell off its hinges a while back and is now tied on by some rope. So we squeeze my backpack through the only backdoor that works and all pile in. We then meet a rather large traffic jam whilst trying to get out of the carpark, with all the Romanians dealing with it in typical Romanian fashion - by all beeping their horns and ... read more
