Oct 23 We had a lazy wake up today. Jay cooked us up some breaky. After hanging out for a bit we decided to walk through town and so some souveiner shopping. The walking/shopping street in galway was very nice. Many of the buildings are very colorful here it makes for a very cheerful sight. Keaney says they try and make up shades of grey here in the sky that is. We walked around town for a few bours I spent alot of money, we had a nice lunch then we headed back to shane's and hung out till he got home from work. When he did Shane and I went out for a 5 mile run through the city. It was a cool way to see the city, we ran down by the harbor it was ... read more

My journey has taken an unexpected detour in Lagos. I've been here now for...let me see, what day is it? (At which time I google "calendar" and look up the date lol)...12 days! At first it was great...lying on a beach all day long, having tonnes of fun and meeting lots of new friends. I was having a blast! But 12 days later I'm starting to realize that just maybe these activities aren't exactly the best for me. Well, not really the activities so much as the place...It's a hard one to explain unless you've actually been here. The vibe pulls you in and doesn't let you go! It's a really small community so everyone knows everyone else, and everyone knows what everyone is up to and gossip is rampant. And because it's so small once ... read more

SUNBOY IS HEADING HOME Well after getting the boat tied up and sorted Willem and I headed off to one of the local bars that has wi fi to check emails. The very exciting news we received is that Sunboy is now an official starter in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2009, along with 225 other cruising and racing yachts. Wahoooo. Our elation was soon quashed when the technicians told us that Hanse had sent the wrong windows and just as I was about to ring up the factory for a few quiet words, Debs rushed up to tell me that they hadn’t sent the wrong windows, it was just a mistake on the technicians part - whew!!! So here we are in the Sopromar boat yard. It is Sunday the 4th of October and our ... read more

I arrived in Lagos on Thursday and it's incredible here! It's a small town in the Algarve (the southern part of Portugal) of about 20,000, and it's basically just a beach town with lots of bars and restaurants and tiny winding streets (like all of Portugal!). The beaches are incredible, though. They have these enormous cliffs and make you feel like a tiny little ant when you're up next to them! The last couple of days have been a welcome retreat from the business of traveling, especially after all the walking in Lisbon. I've just been lying on the beach all day and then going out at night. The first night I got here I ran into this guy on the street advertising for a bar called Johno's, and he told me about a really cheap ... read more

Lisbon (Oeiras) - Sines - Sagres - Lagos - LATE BREAKING NEWS We tied up in Oeiras Marina, smack bang next to a boat called Solitude, a very large and beautiful looking Hanse 54. Small Nest was a couple of boats away and, as usual, saw a few other boats we had shared marinas with since we struck Portugal, a few of them being British and Northern European Yachts heading south to make the Canary Islands for the start of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers which leaves from Las Palmas on the island of Grand Canarias for the 2800 mile crossing of the Atlantic to St Lucia in the Caribbean. We had been talking to Willem and Haike about their arrangements of doing the A.R.C and making their way through the Panama and across the Pacific ... read more

The Algarve - September 18-19 It was a Metro trip to the bus station, where we took a coach. As we headed out of town we crossed the Vasco da Gama bridge (the longest bridge in Europe) which starts out like any bridge going up and being high above the estuary, but then you head down and you are only a small part of the way across. The remainder of the bridge feels like it is almost at the level of the river. I couldn't get a photo of it but it is worth looking it up it to see a photo. We were off to the region of Portugal called the Algarve, and we were staying in the town of Olhao. The local people here were really friendly, waving from the café seats as we ... read more

Good old Lagos....what a crazy and wonderful place! I arrived in Lagos after an intense over night 13 hour train ride from San Sebastian. I was on a bench on the train with 6 other men for 13 hours! Luckily I was able to crawl under the bench and lay on the floor beneath them for the majority of the trip and was even able to grab a few hours of sleep! After a train transfer in Lisbon and another in Tunes I finally made it to Lagos...thank god! Lagos is such a cool town. Narrow streets packed with little shops and bars, open air restaurents everywhere in all the little plazas, always bustling with life and cool things going on. My hostel was called "Gold Coast" and it was for sure one of the nicer ... read more
