No tak. Wyglądajcie meldunków, aeroplan startuje w następny piątek!... read more

Not the greatest blog entry title for sure, but this day out involved a train ride from Gdansk involving stops at both the castle town of Malbork and the larger city of Elblag, so it only seems right to reflect upon both places side by side. The town of Malbork is a prominent one in Poland, if only for being the location of Malbork castle, a sizeable tourist attraction set in grounds which could so very easily occupy a full day if you were to cover all of its features at a leisurely pace. This traveller though, has a tendancy to cram it all in, so the mission was to see the highlights of Malbork castle in the time scale of just over an hour. A general admission ticket includes a free audio guide in... read more

Hello fellow travellers and blogaholics, this time we're trying our hand at sampling the delights of the Tri-City, which is essentially a conurbation formed of the three separate cities of Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia, all located along the northern coast of Poland in the region of Pomerania. Inspired yet? Well, to break you in, a little history probably won't go amiss, so it is worth noting that Gdansk, the most prominent of the three cities, is famous as the location of the break-out of the second world war, plus, on a more positive note, the origin of Lech Walesa and his solidarity movement which led him to become one of the most famous Poles in Polish history. Back then, the shipyards were probably the backbone of the region's economy, and although they still exi... read more

When you talk about Gdansk, it’s worth mentioning Sopot and Gdynia as well... After all they are one ‘city’ – Tricity that is... And yet I can’t say I know all these three cities the same way. Gdynia would have to be the city that I know the least about and that I have visited the least amount of times, maybe because it’s the furthest away from Elblag? I never gave it much thought to be honest but Gdynia is usually not on my to-do list... It used to be pretty good for shopping as all the shopping was centred around one looong street so you could get everything you wanted to buy in one go... Now with all the shopping centres around, there is simply no need to go there anymore... at least for shopping ... read more

When you look at geographical map of Poland you may say we have been spoiled by the diversity of the landscape. We have access to the Baltic Sea, we have beautiful lake districts and broad river valleys and finally the mountain ranges in the south. You could say we have it all! So why so many people choose to go abroad rather than spending holidays close to home? I think it’s very natural to underappreciate what you have just under your nose. Also while for a Westerner tourist holidays in Poland might be ridiculously cheap, for an average Pole it’s not exactly the case. So no wonder that many Poles choose cheap holidays in Turkey, Egypt or Tunisia over the holidays back home because if both come down to the same price why not choosing something ... read more

Go to Gdansk - NOW! You won't regret it!! We certainly didn't. I have to admit though, I couldn't imagine what there could be to see and do there, because my judgement was clouded by 1980s newsreels of shipyards, striking dockers and Lech Wałęsa. It turned out to be a beautiful place with a fascinating history. We stayed at Hostel 22 which isn't too long a taxi journey from the bus or train stations. It is a lovely hotel, and not really a hostel despite the name. There are two slight negative points though. The murals on the walls of the bedrooms may give you nightmares! Ours was decorated with a picture of a fish market but I kept thinking the man in it was about to slap me in the face with a wet fish! ... read more

First Day - Gdansk Zoo and Ptasi Raj Nature Reserve On the first day, I started with the Zoo in the morning as that was something I definitely wanted to do. I was slightly worried about getting the whole zoo done in one day due to the fact that it is still on the winter closing time until the end of the month and closes at three, however I did manage to get it done, though I was there until a couple of minutes after closing time and didn't have much time to go back and look at anything again. Although the zoo grounds are huge, I think about 100 ha are just unused forest which is really nice and gives the zoo a very nice setting surrounded by forest and lots of wild birds including ... read more

Traveling alone of great distance, I took a deep breath and enter the gates to board the Emirates flight bound for Dubai where my connecting flight to Larnaca awaits. After 2 days, I was off to Gdansk..... It was pure business this trip so pictures were very rare. Thanks to some new company policy, I was required to meet my counterparts in the company face to face to put some pictures over the names. But being bitten by the travel bug, I have a incurable disease of the need to see what is to be seen. After all, I was travelling for free. Only negative is that I'm travelling on my own....and I miss T n Z... Enjoy the pics :)... read more
