One of the questions in the Callan book I teach out of asks the students "Are there any castles in the town where you live?" The students ALWAYS answer no. Oh, really? I think these pictures tell a different story... And the much anticipated pictures of my castle - I live on the 3rd floor of a 5-floor block of flats. I live right off the Rynek, behind the Diesel store. Most of the tenants in my building are university students (or old ladies with annoying dogs whose barks echo around the building at 7 am, AWESOME). My flat is a studio and has everything I need - which is what people say when they live in weirdo apartments. My land-lady doesn't speak much English. Every time I see her she asks if I speak German ... read more

I finally have internet connection in my flat! After many frantic gestures and phrases in broken English and Polish, I managed to get the wireless password from my neighbors. So, welcome to my travel blog. After only a few days in Wroclaw, my employer, Speed School of English, whisked me away to teacher training in Gliwice, Poland - about 3 hours away from Wroclaw, by train. The other new teachers in Gliwice are a lot of fun and I am sure we will do some traveling together in the future. But after spending so much time in Gliwice, I started to forget that I didn't live there... So it is nice to be back. Here are some pictures of the people and sites in Gliwice (pronounced "Gli-Veet-sa").... read more

While in Prague, we noticed that the weather had become slightly chilly. After reaching Wrocław, we realized that this "chill" was not leaving Eastern Europe anytime soon. Minutes after arriving in Wrocław (from Dresden, Germany; by train 4 hours) we started searching for a way to get to the Olympic Stadium to pick-up my packet for the marathon. We took a cab, and during the 20 minute ride from the train station we had a brief view of the city. It was during this ride that we noticed the drastic difference between the neat and tidy cities in Western Europe to this city which is in a former Soviet block country (Although Prague was also influenced by communism, we felt that it was very pronounced in Wrocław). Just to fill you in - Wrocław was severely ... read more

After our few days in beautiful cesky krumlov we had a full day of travelling to reach our next destination Wroclaw in South West Poland. We were met from the train by my old friend and colleague Piotr who has recently moved home back to Wroclaw. A further reunion with Alex his wife and also Kat who managed to fly over for the weekend of festivities. Wroclaw is a beautiful town which was previously part of the czech empire and also more recently before WW2 was known as the german city of Breslau. It was returned to Poland after the war and was populated by immigrants coming from the east where Poland is now the Ukraine and Belarus. We has three full days of sightseeing, with our local travel host. We visited a local panoramic art ... read more

After Gdansk, we started back south toward Slovakia. Our first stop was the city of Kolobrzeg, which is one of the most popular health resorts on the Baltic coast. It is also a favorite place for Germans to vacation because of its proximity to Germany. The city is known for its famous lighthouse and also for some of its World War II history. Traditionally, Kolobrzeg has been the sight of Poland's "wedding to the sea" which was a ceremony originally performed in 1920 to celebrate Polands' restored access to the ocean which had been lost after the partitioning of Poland. The next stop was the city of Poznan, which is one of the older settlements in Poland and is home to the one of the oldest churches and the oldest cathedral in Poland. The archcathedral of ... read more

Vrijdagochtend!

Hello Everyone!! I am so sorry that it took me so long to write an entry. I have been busy trying to learn Polish and eating tons of amazing Polish food. I arrived in Europe on Saturday July14th and flew into Wroclaw where Ola, Martin and Ola's aunt met me. I toured around the old city of Wroclaw the next day. I saw the oldest pub in Europe where celebrities like Beethoven and Chopin used to grab a drink! The old town is really pretty, cobblestone everywhere (as in most European cities) and very colourful buildings. We didn't spend much time in Wroclaw because friends of Ola's parents took us to their cottage in the countryside near the border of the Czech Republic. Before heading to the cottage we decided to go see the castle Ksiadz. ... read more
