We last left our heroine sitting at a computer at the hostel writing a blog for Oslo. We find her again 8 hours later beginning her Bergen blog on the same day at the same computer. Today has been a very relaxing day (again!). Lots of walking and just enjoying the amazing weather (twice in a row!!). I actually got too hot today -- quite a feat for Scandinavia. After ditching our bags at the hostel (which is actually a YMCA apparently), we wandered down to the fish market, a block away. This hostel is so centrally-located it's amazing! The fish market is well-known and a must-see when in Bergen, but in reality it's only maybe 10 stands selling fish with a handful of touristy stands surrounding it. However, I did get to taste whale ... read more

6/99-8/99 My parents were kind of against my new traveling ways, so I left for my first full-scale backpacking trip on my 18th birthday. Legally, they could not stop me! Here is a bit about each country I visited and what I did there. Iceland- 3 day stopover. Hitched everywhere as transport was too expensive. Visited Rejkjavik, the Blue Lagoon, Geysir, and Gullfoss. Sweden/Denmark/Finland/Estonia- Revisited some countries that I loved. Saw some old friends in Finland. Germany- Hamburg, Koln (thrilling cathedral!), Aachen, Rhine river area, Cochem (my favorite German town. Situated on the Mosel river with a castle looming above), Frankfurt, Rothenburg, Heidelberg, Munich, Lindau, Dresden, Berlin, Lubeck. I had a lot of places I wanted to see in Germany and was rarely disappointed. Germany had some of the best-preserved sights coupled with the best ... read more

Once again, more time on a train, more “me” time. On a train from Oslo to Myrdal, as part of my “Norway in a Nutshell” tour. Things I’ve realized- I should probably definitely think about the weather where I’m going. I’m freezing and there’s tons of snow on the ground. In June! Why don’t I ever think? Also, I just saw a couple of houses with sod roofs. What’s up with that? I’m not sure, but I’m assuming to conserve heat? Very pretty landscape—but very foggy and hazy, though. Ok, it’s 6:30pm, and I’ve been ‘transported’ since 8am. 10 ½ hours, and still 12 more to go! Whew! Completely worth it, though! I’ve decided that Fjord Norway now tops my “Most Amazing Experiences” list. Wow! It’s at a time like this that I wish my ... read more

Hi all thanks for all your messages keep them coming. We have been on the road for over two weeks now and all i can say is what an amazing place Norway is we have done approx 2500KM. After arriving in Stavanger we headed south and east down the coast to Oslo and met up with a friend for a couple of days. We happened to be in Oslo for National day when all Norwegiens celebrate the creation of Norway and the women dress up in national costume there are different costumes for different parts of the country. Now we have come west again to Bergen and are now heading north. Norway - What a place full of mountains, tunnels, lakes (some frozen) around every corner, fjords and blonde blue eyed women!!! We decided to avoid ... read more

Well what can I say.... words do not express the scenery in Norway. If ever you get chance to come, you must visit the fjords!!! Having now spent 2 weeks on the road, my travel itinery was as follows. I left England on the 12th May 2007 after spending several days in the lake district. This was to check the van out in good old blighty to make sure she was not going to cause trouble straight away. She is, however, performing superbly. Fingers crossed she will make it all the way to the artic circle and beyond. The ferry crossing from Newcastle to Stavanger was so calm I could have been on a boat in the Carribean rather than in the North Sea. Following 19hrs aboard, a cheesy caberet act on board and losing some ... read more

After my disappointing introduction to Norway, I found Bergen absolutely incredible and it could do no wrong despite its abnormally frigid weather that caused me to hide indoors at the guesthouse reading the trashy romances. I'm not sure whether it was the charming painted wooden houses with its funky colored doors built upon narrow non-grid like winding streets or if it was the layout of the city with its houses built in steps on the hill side each with a great view of down below and the harbour. The city was great for a casual stroll down at the harbour or browsing through the galleries housed in the historic area of Bryggen with restorations ongoing using traditional methods and materials. My one and only museum stop in Bergen was to the Hanseatic Museum, a restored ... read more

Marstrand - Lillesand/Norway 8:05 am Wednesday Departure finally. Weather’s cleared up but the winds are nearly like yesterday. After breakfast we departed Marstrand where we had alot of shelter. Motored out and put up the main sail early in the morning. Winds are cold. Val has been under the weather. Very sea-sick. I’ve just been sleeping. Lars put a plaster for sea-sickness behind my ear last night. A bit tired. 13:30 pm Winds died out so we.ve taken in the genoa and are motoring for awhile. Our heading is Norway, ETA Mandal approx 12 hours. 00:40 am Thursday We didn’t make it to Mandal. Half way thru the afternoon the waves started to pick up and were about 3 - 4 meters high. The front of the boat hit so hard that everything shuddered. We ... read more

So after more than 5 hours on the boat, watching how the world is amazing everywhere and how you can feel yourself free and spiritualy high in these kind of places, it was time to come down to earth and find the way to the hostel in Montana, out of town... I finally got there just on time to see a bit of the sunset, it was probably around 10:30 pm, surprising for me ! I had only one day to explore Bergen, i don't think i saw a lot but... I started early in the morning to climb all the way up to the Mount Ulriken, 642 m, highest of the seven mountains surroundding Bergen, kind of hard walk, very steep, through the clouds, actually litterally in the clouds, so i couldn't get the ... read more

Up North to Flam Europe » Norway » Sognefjord By Olivi3rMay 2nd 2007The SognefjordAfter few very peaceful days in Oslo with Carina, i took the train to go further north, to Myrdal, in the mountains, then, the famous raiway Myrdal - Flam, amazing first part of the trip... Again and again surprising landscape, dreaming scenery... I stayed overnight in Flam, hiking at the end of the first day, inside the Flam valley, and the morning after to Otternes, the tiny little town, overhanging the Sognefjord, had lunch there and just enjoying the sun, the silence, the view and everything i could received from the Earth...... read more
