Day 7 Dong….Dong……Ding ..Dong……Dong …Ding….Ding fuckin’ Dong, fuckin’ ding….dong…dong….ohhhh stop it!!….ding…..please, please …..ding…dong …..AHHHHHHHHHH! Literally five feet from the window that I was sleeping, was a god damn church. It just wasn’t the fact that I ‘slept’ beside the window that faced the church, it was that some insensitive Dutch priest/minister/reverend decided to play with his bells for an hour at six o’clock in the morning. So needless to say, I got an early start to the day's’ festivities. Baggy eyed and irritated, I ventured downstairs to the pub in an attempt to make up for the premature wakening with a nice Amsterdam/Irish breakfast. As all good breakfasts must start with a cup of fresh hot coffee, I ordered one from the bartender. A dollop of milk and a spoonful of sugar followed up with a ... read more

Day 6 I woke early from my booze-enhanced slumber and made my way to the train station to board the first available train to Amsterdam. A mixture of anticipation and uncertainty cluttered my mind as I awaited my steel chariot. What would Amsterdam be like? Will it be everything I dreamed of? Is anything there illegal? How is a Canadian who grew up in a relatively conservative and prudent society expected to react to its’ very antithesis? The amount of questions running through my now sober mind would drive others to great binges of drugs and alcohol. However, I am not a normal person. I can evade the evil necessities of life. I can say no to drugs. I am a strong man.... well at least I thought so until I travelled to Disneyland for Adults. ... read more

This is continued from Basel. Upon our arrival at the Central Station in Amsterdam we started to make our way for the information booth. It was another situation where we had no reservations and we going to just find our way. Used to do that a lot. I’d never do it again. But when we were young its how we rolled. We ended up following someone to a hotel that was nothing special. It was over on the edge of the red-light district. This trip was February 1997 and it is now October 2006 as I write this so I don’t remember many details. Once checked in we headed out and started our touring. It was the first time either of us had been to Amsterdam. So we were just taking in the sights of the ... read more

Hoi iedereen, Even uitproberen of ik hier wat kan plaatsen. Als het lukt ga ik hier mijn reisblog bijhouden waar ik af en toe een bericht zal plaatsen. Vanavond is mijn verjaardagsafscheidsfeestje. Waarschijnlijk hebben we veel te veel eten maar het is wel allemaal lekker. Wie weet kunnen Dorus, Marvin (de tijdelijke bewoner van mijn kamer) en ik er morgen nog van smullen. Groetjes, Klaas... read more

UK & Europe, May 1993 This was our 2nd visit to Amsterdam as well. We stopped over for business previously for a couple of days, before heading to London. Monnickendam just outside Amsterdam was where we stayed and we both enjoyed walking around the streets. It is like a mini Amsterdam with its canals and bridges. Today it is a small fishing village but was an important port around the 15th century. The next day we went to another tourist trap – to learn a bit and look at Delft pottery. Interesting and beautiful, but of course, you were expected to buy something. We bought a tiny plate to remind us of our visit. Then we went on a canal cruise through Amsterdam. Another laid back way of seeing some of the city. I was thankful ... read more

Europe and United Kingdom Trip - May 1993 After spending five days in Bavaria, we flew to Amsterdam where we were going to stay for two days. As we approached Schipol airport, I looked out of the plane window and saw swathes of colour from the tulips growing in Holland - so colourful and brought to mind the old song "Tulips from Amsterdam". Such a cliché, I know, but couldn't help myself. From the airport we caught a train to the centre of Amsterdam. This was the first time I had ever seen a ‘double decker’ train, but unfortunately we didn’t get to travel in one. We dragged our very large suitcases (on wheels) from the station to our hotel - Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, courtesy of the company that Paul worked ... read more
