This morning you would have spotted us walking through another market, the Albert Cuyp Markt. That was where we headed after our tea, coffee, and bagels, always a great way to begin the day. The market is made up of numerous stalls again selling a wide range of goods, from clothes and shoes, fabric and sewing supplies, cheese, flowers, to toys, and souvenirs. These stall are on both sides of the street and run for more than 3 blocks. There are so many goods to browse at but besides that it is so interesting to people watch. You learn a lot about human nature, social contact and manners. When people are approached with a question some are short and curt with their responses and others are more than accommodating giving you an adequate response plus a lot more. An example would be one of the guys in the bike shop who took care of our business with the bike rental and went into a full out lengthy conversation about World War II Liberation of Holland. Another thing we noticed that most of the people are bilingual and quickly switch from Dutch to English when they hear what we speak.
Jordan,
another neighborhood area was our next destination. It takes a while to get from destination to destination because there are always things to stop and look at along the way and of course add in some time for locating yourself on a map and figuring where to turn next. Along the way there we passed through an area called Nine Streets which was many blocks of shopping. The level of stores in this area ranged from high end brand names on down the line.
Sorry to say, we were unable to go inside the Ann Franke house. We did get photos of the outside but the line was almost 4 blocks long and it had begun to rain. An observation we made were the locals of Amsterdam are a hardy group of people. Even with the
rain and cold they continue to ride their bikes, many without jackets and definitely without rain coats.
By this time we were ready for a break so stopped for a relaxing latte.
We made a few other stops along the way to arrange our bike rental for the next few days and some maps to guide us through Amsterdam. Upon returning to our hotel
we needed to repack our belongings since what we don't need for the bike ride will be stored here by Alexander. He was one of those special people who seemed genuinely interested in our plans for the remainder of our vacation. It's an interesting situation here. He is living in a storage container not more than 10 ft x 15 ft in the back of his building. The city is doing structural improvements on the foundations of these buildings on this block in preparation of the construction of a 600 car parking structure on the next block. He's been living in the storage container for 6 months and will continue to do so for another 6 months. It does have windows though.
With that task completed we headed to an Italian restaurant recommended by Alex. Our meals consisted of lasagna and spaghetti bolognse along with two glasses of red wine. Sorry, you'll have to use your imaginations for the photo since we didn't take our camera. You'll have to take our word for it that it was very tasty!
After dinner we strolled the neighborhood and ended the evening with a milkshake.
