Happy New Year World! We began the New Year by doing something neither of us have ever been crazy enough to do... We went for a swim! At 3:00pm we ran down the beach and jumped into the North Sea! What a rush! When Sander and Annelie suggested it to us, Elysia was onboard immediately. Mike was not. He thought that such an activity was rather foolish and a little crazy. But, Annelie and Sander explained that all that dove into the sea on January 1st would recieve a free bowl of pea soup. That, of course, was enough to convince Mike. So, at about 1:00pm, Sander and Annelie's friend Pietr picked us up and drove us to a city called Katwijk aan Zee. It took a little under an hour to get there, and we ... read more

And so it begins, The first entry of this blog is mostly going to be a rant of what the plan is and a basic introduction to the nutters that have decided to go on a journey. So, a long long time ago (... a year give or take) Duncan met Rebecca at a bar. This bar was not just any bar, it was also the workplace of the two which will be the main focus of this tale. Friends they decide to embark on a road trip around Scotland and a visit to T in the Park. They fall in love and end up in a relationship bla bla bla. After already having plans to travel to Asia before either had met each other, earlier plans fell apart and made way to a shared journey. ... read more

after reaching our first destination, what was only 15 km away from home, and for me the first time ever staying in a 5 star hotel, we got welcomed with a nice bottle of prosecco in a junior suite at the 12 floor of Manhattan Hotel Rotterdam, after settling in we got to our dinner appointment and got spoiled by the kitchen and the wine selection Mr. Boudewine had to offer to us , later completly satisfied and a little dipsy we went of to bed , woke up with a slide hangover and a sunrise welcoming us, now after a good breakfast we are getting ready to hit the airport. thanks to all the staff of Manhattan Hotel to give us a good Start to our Journey.... read more

Wednesday 17th August, 2011 The Hague. We arrived early by train, and enjoyed a starbucks breakfast at the railway station. We set off on foot, armed with google maps on the iphone to find our main destination for the day; the Maurizhous, an art gallery with a collection of Dutch masters including Ver meer, Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Franz Hals, Holbein and others. The most famous painting they house was featured in a film,The Girl with the Pearl Earring. We walked down the quiet streets of closed shops, past the houses of government, where important looking people were arriving for work. We arrived at the museum just after opening. There were no throngs of tourists at the entrance. The building is a grand house with an imposing foyer featuring a double staircase up both sides of the ... read more

It's true, all good things must come to an end. That, however, does not mean better things do not arise. It's August 17, 2011, almost 3 months to the date that I left on this crazy trip of mine, and I am going to board a plane home tomorrow morning. I am south of Amsterdam in a more rural town - staying with friends of Mike Zwicker (Dad's military days). After two nights spent in Amsterdam, I am more than thrilled to have spent last night in a comfortable, smoke-free room with peace and quiet. Amsterdam, without a doubt, lived up to its name. A name I thought I wanted to explore longer, but was so ready to get the heck out of there! It's funny the things I have learned about myself on this trip. ... read more

It must have been a terrible summer in the Netherlands thus far. Everyone is so white. We are sitting in the train from Nijmegen to Rotterdam. It is a beautiful new train. Even wifi is aboard. Unfortunely graphitimakers have found their way here already. I am afraid the Dutch have the worst graphitimakers in the world. Nowhere in the world you see such a lack of phantasy. It is cold and it is raining. When we arrive at the Central Station we see Robin, my son. The last time we saw eachother was in Chili a half year ago. And then we see next to him also Majorie, my daughter. We thought her to be in Dubai. The last time we saw eachother was in Syria, about 11 months ago. It is a big surprise to ... read more

After only one day back in Holland, its still quite early to look back at this trip. It was a long vacation with many strong impressions, many fascinating events, and fortunately no bad experiences. The flying statistics are quite impressive: total flying time is almost 100 hrs (recorded from take-off to touch-down is 97:42 hrs, so I probably spent some 110 hrs in the cockpit). The total distance flown (as recorded by the GPS) is 13375 nm or 24771 km, more than half around the world. All this was done in 22 days of flying, so I spent about 5 hours per flying day in the cockpit. But I had 13 flying-free days as well - and those were highly enjoyable as well. The longest flight was on the very first day, going from Stavanger to ... read more

This blog I'm writing from home, DDN did bring me safely back. I left Reykjavik rather early: at 8:30 we were airborne in a beautiful morning sun. This time Reykjavik was free of clouds, while the rest from Iceland was covered with low stratus clouds (just the opposite from my arrival a month ago). But all mountains peaked through the clouds, and it looked very beautiful - I spent the hour over Iceland just gazing down and taking pictures. Then came more Atlantic, partially without clouds, and the low sun revealed long wavelength waves in the open ocean. Its a long flight over the water, but we had a nice tailwind to make it a little shorter. The first destination today was Wick, the most Northern airport in Scotland. Far North Aviation, the FBO there, has ... read more
