April/May- Tulips in Amsterdam Every year millions of tulips are blooming in and around Amsterdam. The tulip season in Holland marks the beginning of spring. The colorful flowers and the rising temperatures make many people from all over the world happy but this year with covid travel restrictions virtually viewing these beautiful field# was the only way to enjoy them. Stephan was the guide and his camera skills to ensure that we see close up to all the different varieties was wonderful. His knowledge about the tulip cultivation was really interesting to listen to as we tip toed through the tulips. The Dutch have cultivated an almost unrivalled amounts of flowers for centuries and currently produce around three billion tulips bulbs every year. 2nd May The annual Tulip Festival in Amsterdam, held throughout the entire month of April, brightens up the streets of the city with colourful tulips adorning gardens at various locations in Amsterdam. The goal of the festival is to eventually have one tulip for every Amsterdammer — amounting to 800,000 tulips in the city alone. The tulip is one of the most enduring symbols of the Netherlands and Amsterdam. About this tour Mark begins this tour on the outskirts of Amsterdam in the small village of Durgerdam and shows how the Dutch have defended themselves against water for centuries. Durgerdam is made up of a string of colourful woden houses on an ancient dike / levee and is exceptionally pretty. The walk includes a look at the tiny drawbridge behind the dike next to the old church of the village. Next Mark takes you on a 5 minute scooter ride to the next stop though typical Dutch countryside of green fields and ditches, 5 metres below sea level! His camera is in a body harness so you see what he sees and he explains what is passing by. As this was the time of economical crisis, many unemployed worked on this immense project moving manually enormous amounts of ground from the canal boats, trains and around the space using small wagons and temporary rail tracks. All together around 50 000 people worked on the project. The enthusiasm was enormous. Often clerks from the municipality, whose pay has not been very high at the time, worked at the park. During the war the works slowed down. Germans took some parts of the park for their military installations.
