Issy has been having a lot of trouble sleeping since we left home, and sleeping tablets don’t seem to have been helping too much. In desperation as we strolled home last night she went into a late night shop and bought a choc chip cookie. This wasn’t just any choc chip cookie; it had a slightly greenish tinge to it, and pictures of a very suspicious looking leaf splattered all over the packaging. I’ve heard stories about hard narcotics staying in your system long after you’ve used them, and that drug testing can pick this up for weeks afterwards. We’re going to the United States in a few weeks time, and I’ve also heard stories about what they do to druggies there, none of which are nice. I’m not even sure I should be writing about ... read more

We wake up to the sound of heavy rain. Issy decides on a morning of domestics so I head out into the downpour alone. Indoor destinations are looking attractive so I make my way towards a couple of interesting looking churches, safe in the knowledge that these wouldn’t have been on any of Issy’s itineraries. I stumble across Rembrandtplein Square which is dominated by a very large cast iron statue of the great master. I read that it was first unveiled here in 1852 which makes it the oldest statue that’s still standing anywhere in Amsterdam. Twenty two bronze statues that represent the characters from Rembrandt’s masterpiece “The Night Watch” stand at the foot of the main statue and have only been added in the last decade or so. I stop to take some happy snaps ... read more

July 18 Ann Frank I don't even know how to begin this chapter of our trip....We knew the story of Ann Frank but nothing brings someones story closer to your heart than being there and hearing the details, seeing first hand where they lived and hearing the voice of Otto Frank her Father in his post war thoughts . His reflections add clarity and a look inside his mind and heart as well as Ann's and their family. When I think of Ann I will always remember that her story, so carefully and sincerely detailed in her diaries is but 1 story among the stories of more than 6 million other victims of the holocaust. Each life lost had their own story to tell about their lives, how the German Occupation affected them and their hope/fright/sorrow ... read more

Issy and I realise that neither of us know a single word of Dutch, so we consult the Google oracle to try to learn at least a few rudimentary phrases. We start with “hello”. The oracle tells us that the Dutch word for this is “hallo”. We are very encouraged; we think that we’ve probably got some chance of remembering this. We hope that perhaps all Dutch words will be similar to their English equivalents. Now that we can successfully greet people we need to move on to working out what to say if we want something. The oracle tells us that the Dutch word for “please” is ”alsjeblieft”. This is slightly less encouraging. After further research we decide that the best we can hope for is that if we say “hallo” often enough the locals ... read more

Today we start a stint away from hot weather and beaches as we make our way to Amsterdam. Corfu airport is totally chaotic. As we drop off our trusty little hire car, a long line of buses pulls up outside the arrivals area, and what feels to us like thousands of people are now packing themselves into the small terminal and spilling out onto the footpath outside. We join a queue, but soon find that we should only be in it if we want to go to Bristol. I’m sure that Bristol’s a very nice place, but it’s not on our agenda for today. A Russian sounding lady with a very loud voice is barking orders at everyone, trying to get them into the right check-in queues. If the queue for their flight isn’t open yet ... read more

July 17 We now interrupt this blog transmission for a moment of history in our world. Okay who among you reading this blog learned that in the year 1620 the Pilgrims left Plymouth England and headed out to the new world? Well I'm here to tell you there was sooooo much more to the story! Every trip I take I discover astonishing facts about history that didn't make it into our school books, for instance: Most students don’t learn about the time the Pilgrims spent in Holland. They weren't called Pilgrims then, they were called Separatist because they were "separating" from their church and they arrived in Holland from England in about 1609. Seems they quickly learned that they needed more than Holland had to offer and thought their children may be becoming "too Dutch" which ... read more

Skipping ahead..... We arrived in Amsterdam late afternoon after a tedious ride on the train from Paris. As mentioned in a previous post the hardest thing to deal with on a train is your luggage. Tom and I were close to the last to board and I was pushing my heavy large piece while carrying three other carry-on pieces down a narrow aisle. Tom was behind me with his heavy piece, a carry-on and his tennis bag. There was no room in the baggage compartment at the beginning of the train so we were pushing the luggage to the other end. Thank God people took pity on us. A gentlemen got up from his seat in front of me, grabbed my large piece and found a spot for it in the rear compartment. When we got ... read more

After the craziness of trying to find our bus, our travel to Amsterdam went smoothly...until we tried to store our luggage. Despite what at least 2 websites claimed, there is no luggage storage at Amsterdam Sloterdijk and the luggage storage onsite at Amsterdam Central is only available if you have a train ticket. Sigh. Thankfully, we were directed to a luggage storage place just down the street - where you can also rent bikes. We did not participate in the bike rental, but dumped our stuff and went to go find a quick meal before going on a canal tour. I highly recommend a canal tour since Amsterdam is a city on water. According to our tour, there are over a thousand bridges. The canals are also the only place that you are safe from the ... read more

Amsterdam to Zijdewind That’s the APT River Cruise done n dusted. We moored in Amsterdam where we checked out this unique city (Venice of the North) on a canal boat tour in the afternoon, and a walk in the evening into the Red Light District window shopping after a farewell dinner on board. Fascinating to say the least. The following morning we farewelled our travelling companions and disembarked from our floating home of two weeks. A reunion with dear friends Cor and Marianne who took us to check out a working windmill, actually pumping water, on the way to their lovely home in Zijdewind where they hosted us for five days of exploring North Holland. We have toured the canal system around the local villages, stopping at an Irish Pub on the way for a Guinness ... read more

A few days before our departure, I flew to Peoria to visit with family ahead of the trip. On May 28, Jill and I took a Peoria Charter Coach to O'Hare Airport to board our Icelandair flight. Following a plane change in Reykjavik,we were bumped to First Class for the 3 hour flight to Amerstdam. Our hotel was very convenient to the train station, the main canal, and the tour busses; however, it was in the Red Light District! The hotel was very nice, but the neighborhood was a "happenin'" place. My introduction to Amsterdam was in the form of "Offbeat Amsterdam Red Light District Tour." This was pretty amazing! The streets were very busy with customers/gawkers/tourists, and the area had the smell of the coffee shops. They aren't selling coffee, but marijuana of all types. ... read more
