Today we tried to get an early start so that we could go to Monaco, Grasse (the perfume capital of the world) and then head to Antibes to the beach. One thing we've learned on our trip is that getting somewhere usually takes twice as long as you think. We left Aix around 9:30 am and headed to Monaco, the furthest point on our list of places to go. I have always wanted to see Monaco. I love the glamour of Monte Carlo in Casino Royale, the James Bond movie, and the girls and I recently rented the Monte Carlo movie with Selena Gomez. So we thought we could take a quick stroll around town and see it for ourselves. Well, we never made it to see Monte Carlo and the casino. We walked from what ... read more

Monaco gets comparisons to Disneyland all the time with it's fairytale cleanliness and picturesque residences. From the moment the train arrives this place does feel like a magic kingdom, the main difference only becoming apparent later on when you realize that everyone visiting is a pauper in a land of princes. If you drive a shinny new Mercedes looking cool in Santa Monica, get ready to be upstaged big-time. Still, Monaco is used to being a tourist destination, and they’re good at not rubbing it in. If you’re decently dressed you can make it through every door, although you may soon realize nothing is in your price range on the other side. Robyn and I began our late afternoon stroll at the castle atop the hill; this is where the Price of Monaco resides. We dined ... read more

After a couple days sightseeing in Nice, we decided we had to go to Monaco. It was a 30 minute train ride, and easy to catch. First we walked up the hill to see the prince's palace, with a spectacular view of the city. Then we hiked down the hill to the main area of Monte Carlo, stopping along the way for a sunset dinner where I finally found my salmon tartare. After dinner, we walked over to the Hotel de Paris and crashed an outdoor party set in the middle of Louis Vuitton and jewelry stores. I think it was sponsored by Bentley, and celebrating an artist who designed the cover of a Monaco magazine. Porsches, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins and Bentleys galore in the roundabout hotel valet parking. The BMWs and Mercedes seemed like the ... read more

Note: All events described in this entry occurred on December 26, 2006. For more updated trips and entries please refer back to this blog at a later date. Updated trips and entries will NOT have a note like this. thanks and enjoy! Even though I was enjoying my trip to Cote d'Azur, I did lament a bit that I was unable to leave France in order to visit more of continental Europe as planned. However, I did manage to visit the small Principalite du Monaco during my fifth day of travel. My throat was still a bit sore, however thanks to my medicine my coughing had stopped. I also had more energy than on Christmas day so I felt it would be safe for me to go visit Monaco. I had always wanted to visit Monaco/Monte ... read more

Today I would be making my way a short way out of Nice to Monaco. This is definitely something that I had been looking forward to. In part because my dad was there a few years back and I was looking forward to seeing some of the things that he had seen himself. As I made my way out the train station (which is out of this world by the way!!), I think that I caught Grand Prix fever! There were already setting up bleachers and stands for the race that is only set for the end of May. I would later learn that it actually takes 2 months to actually prepare for this event that welcoes 22,000 spectators (more than the actual population of this small principality). I had a small map from my guidebook ... read more

Sorry folks have tried to send the blog but the ship's internet is rubbish!! Haven't had time to send it from port. We are now in Monaco having spent yesterday in Rome. Have written up about it but it's refusing to send everything so maybe it'll allow me to do this small amount. Will send the final part of the blog tomorrow from home. As they say "All good things must come to an end". Sadly I am now going to do final packing and get ready for final night out onboard ship. ... read more

Our last 2 nights in France were spent in the French Riviera, staying in the village of Antibes. Getting really into the rhythm of the Contiki ways, breakfast at 7am, bags to coach at 7:45am. Waved goodbye to the Chateau at 8am, bound for our next 2 nights down the far south of the country. Took us a 6 hour journey to get to Antibes. There were thankfully washing machines on site in Antibes, almost down to my last set of clean clothes! Upon arrival, a nice surprise waiting for us once we put our bags in the cabin accommodation. We all strolled up to the breakfast room, no it wasn't actually breakfast, nor would you want to eat these for brekkie either! Contiki on-site crew brought plates of... wait for it... Cuisses de Grenouille, otherwise ... read more

Spent 3 hours at the most beautiful Aquarium in the world, the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, associated with Jacque Costeau. Clown Fish in Anemone, Nautilus beautiful corral. Had lunch in the Terrace of the Museum, Spagetti and small clams. Then to the famous Monte Carlo Casino to see the very rich, and did some people watching, a short look inside the casino. Then took the Elevator from outside the casino back to the water front and a water taxi across the harbor to the boat. Our dinner tonight was Lobster Taill with Rosetto. ... read more

Yes it has happened. VCU is beast. As I sit here and type this VCU is showing the world that we want it more. I hope we win cause if we don't then this will look so silly. There are so many freaking commercials for these games. I never knew just how many there were until I watched a game here and found out that they only did 2 minutes of commercials at halftime and that was it. It's even worse because these are all the same commercials over and over again and at the most random times throughout the game. I've been told by the Appelbee's lady to stop watching my laptop and go down to my local Applebee's about 5 times so far. The nearest Applebee's? Uhhhh the closest Applebee's. Riiiight. I told her ... read more

Day 2 of our trip and we stopped by our 3rd country already. Daddy had never been to this one before and it was a very small country and much smaller than the CITY I live in. This was my 44th country I have been to. Not to bad for a 5 year old, and considering daddy had only been to 3 countries (Mexico and Canada) by the time he was 20, I think I am doing pretty good. We first walked to a place where they had a lot of famous soccer players feet in the cement called "The Champions Promenade". There were a lot of players from Brasil and Italy, but none from the USA. Daddy is a big soccer fan, and we both had a lot of fun going to the World Cup ... read more
