Leaving Albania turned out to be more difficult than expected. The bus to Macedonia which I had asked about on Saturday and was supposed to leave at nine in the morning on Monday didn't... So I looked on the map of Albania and took the first minibus I could find to the town closest to the border. And than I tried to get another ride to the border itself but the directions to where the bus was supposed to depart from turned out to be directions on how to walk to the border so I ended up walking out of town through the fields towards Macedonia. I stopped at a house and asked directions and they hailed a car which brought me to the border. Once in Macedonia things went a lot smoother. There was a ... read more

... read more

June 9th - Orhid Today was an elusive search for sunshine. This town and the surroundings are beautiful, but I just love sun. I thought that by June it would be well unto summer weather, but I guess I should have done a bit more research as it was chilly an rainy almost the whole time there. We didn’t have any definite plans, but just wondered throughout the town checking out all the nooks and crannies. After a disappointing lunch in the newer part of town we headed down to the lake front to walk along over the monasteries on the northern-western(maybe?) point. We had some excitement when the sun popped out for a good 15 minutes (that’s when most the pictures were taken) but some angry looking rain clouds and a cold wind soon showed ... read more

This part was written by my traveling buddy Claire, i wish she wrote more cause shes does a much better job then me! June 8th; Sofia-Skopje-Ohrid I am dosing off as the dreary weather in Sofia welcomes Matt and I to the Balkans. We start our trip off in Sofia - everything is great so far - we have our tickets to Skopje in advance and a taxi is waiting for us downstairs. 15 minutes later I realize that we are actually driving towards the airport not the bus station. We have 15 minutes until the bus leaves by the time we finally arrive to the bus station and I am nearing a point of unbearable exhaustion because of the “horse” pill from Turkey that Matt gave me for my cold. It’s hitting strong. We make ... read more

I visited the Gostivar Macedonia in 2004. I have been notime to spend the location but I took some photos from this place. Albanians and Turkish peoples live there with the Macedonians. I learned that 60% of Gostivar peoples are Albanians. Some of the local buildings and market places name are written with the three different languages. 2004 Yili Eylül Ayinda Yağmurlu Bir Günde Ziyaret Etme Şansi Buldugum Gostivar Birçok Tarihi Mekana Sahip. Sadece 1-2 Saat Zamanim Olmasina Rağmen Bir Çok Fotograf Çektim. Gostivar Makedonyanin Türk Nüfusu En Yoğun Şehirlerinden Birisi. Çoğunluğu Arnavut ve Türk Kökenli insanlardan Olusuyor. “Its like Iraq; no war,…but war….” Yes, that’s right, we are in the Republic of Makedonija (the ‘Former Yugoslav’ one, though officially that title doesn’t exist inside the country…) - to the west of Bulgaria and therefore nowhere near Turkey or Istanbul! Home of the second best flag in Europe. Provocatively Bulgarians regard this place as ‘Western Bulgaria’ so no tour of Bulgaria would have seemed complete without coming here, also we had to get a package sent somewhere and Poste Restante doesn’t seem to exist in Bulgaria so Skopje seemed like a good bet. Confounded by a lack of roads and armed Albanian rebels we have finally made it to Ohrid, on the shores of the lake by the same name, a beautiful city and former capital of the old Bulgarian kingdom, though also the ... read more

Much to my surprise, getting out of Albania was rather trouble-free. I managed to board the bus mildly conscious for a five-in-the-morning departure for Korçe. Having arrived a few minutes early and aware that Albanians share the same concept of punctuality as the rest of their Mediterranean neighbors (which is zero), I darted off for an espresso only to be told to get right back on the bus immediately. The driver saw no other passengers this steamy morning and decided it was time to go. We were out of Berat before 4:50. Go figure. The bus to Korçe takes a circuitous route, in an almost 180-kilometer clockwise crescent. According to maps, there exists a road that covers that distance in more or less ninety kilometers. But when I inquired why no bus traveled the apparently shorter ... read more

Still in the train after Serbia i got to Macedonia. After heavy armed border controlls after Presevo Valley at Kumanovo i could continue towards Skopje and on to Geveglija on the border with Greece. Here i also took pictures and enjoyed the views. A change of climate told me i was getting close to Greece. The weather was getting better, sunnier and hotter. Macedonia was small village after small village and you could see many mosques in every village you passed. Far you could see the mountains and the nature was beautiful. The closer to greece the drier it got.... read more

I recieved a very interesting comment on my Santorini page from a very pissed off American girl, whom I unfortunately can't find in the blogger-search. I would like to get a chat with her, she seems interesting. But before any more Americans might be to offended, I will try and explain my earlier comments on being with 30 Americans. So here we go: 1. Firstly I have American as well as Canadian friends, whom I am very fund of. And I find great interest in having a chat with an American considering the fact that if you wish to know something about a country (and who doesn't wanna know some insider about the States) then who else to ask than a native. 2. The reason I was very pissed on being with 30 Americans comes from ... read more
