The only possible reason there is no direct train from Sofia to Skopje can be to see who is man enough to take the bus. This was the most unrelaxing six-hour trip ever. Our coach wound its way high up the mountainside in the pouring rain along narrow, unlit roads. Of course, as it was through a border point there were plenty of trucks coming the other way, causing our driver to lean ever closer to the precipice above a drop of around 1,000 metres. At some points I really wished he would get off the phone and concentrate. Arriving in one piece at around 9pm we wearily accepted an offer from a hawking taxi driver to take us to our hostel as we were unsure of its location. During a five minute ride where our ... read more

Saturday, 20th September 2008 - Alexandria I cycled in the afternood and it felt nice to be on the road again. Short before Alexandria my view fell on a shop where several strange things where offered: broken music instruments, old mashines, tools, and even beds! I liked it :) I stopped and talked to the shop owener Ioannes (Johannis, an about 55 year old man) with a smile. He invited me to a coffee, and in fact I could sleep at his house later. When he closed the shop, I left the bike there and he took me with his car to a big market and fair, where I was invited for food and bought some shoes that I hoped would suit my better for cycling. I made sure that I had his phone number, so ... read more

Alright, so my first week of pre-service training for the Peace Corps is done! Waking up, sitting in uncomfortable chairs for hours...You get the point. All of my Peace Corps cohorts are really cool. I know I am going to learn a lot from many of these people whether it be professional or personal in nature. I am staying with a host family in Negotino. My host brother, Simon, is a seventeen year old actor type kid. He's pretty funny and really nice. His father is hilarious from what I gather. I don't understand him, but everyone else seems to always laugh at what he says. Hilda, my host mother, is an extremely sweet lady. She is always making sure I have enough Turkish coffee and educates me as best as she can on current pop ... read more

Geo: 41.12, 20.82An exciting city tour of Tirana awaited us this morning!! We drove from our beautiful hotel along the main boulevard of Tirana, the street of the Martyrs of the country through Mother Teresa square and stopped in Skanderberg Square. Along this main street, built by the Italians during their brief ownership of the country in the 30s, most of the main buildings are situated. We passed the President's palace, the parliament building, the University and some other government buildings. The Main square, Skanderberg is named after a hero of the 15th century and there is a massive statue to him there. There are also many ugly buildings, remnants of the Communist regime of Hoxha in the 60s and after. The traffic is chaotic and I was most amused watching policemen with batons trying to ... read more

I wrote this last night, April 29th. It’s now the night of the 30th and we’re at a hotel in Athens. I don’t have time to update about today, so enjoy this news from yesterday and I’ll post (with pictures!) as soon as I can. xo Last night was our night in Nis. It’s actually a pretty nice town...there’s a street with lots of little cafes that are extremely cheap thanks to the exchange rate. Nate and I ate at the Pleasure Café...we both had fufu fruit drinks, he had a sub/panini thing, I had a steak salad and we shared yummy raspberry cheesecake...all for less than $15. Nate also bought a new wallet that was handcrafter leather from a Serbian gift store. He doesn’t have anything to put in the wallet...but it’s still nice ☺ ... read more

The bus got into Skopje at 545am. I had to change bus and the bus to Ohrid left just pass 6am. Got into Ohrid at 945am. At the bus station an elderly gentleman asked me if I was looking for accommodation and I said yes. He was riding a bicycle so we walked to his house which was a 10 minute walk from the bus station. He said he can give me a room with an attached bathroom for Euros 15 per night and a room without an attached toilet for Euro 15 a night. Vesna from Belgrade told me I should check-out Apartment Kosta as it is in the city centre and near the lake. I told him I will check apartment Kosta and come back, he tried to do a better deal by saying ... read more

Well we actually had breakfast in this hostel but it was slightly uninspiring. Rob as usual made the most of it by having as much toast as a person can consume. It was too smokey to sit around in the kitchen for long so despite the snow outside we went to explore the city. The road into the centre was very flooded so we had to be careful whilst we walked. We took it in turns to avoid the rubbish and holes in the pavement and being soaked by cars driving past us. We easily found the centre of the new part of the city, less easy was believing it was the centre. Maybe it was the first properly cold week of the winter and so nobody fancied going outdoors but there was nobody around. We ... read more
