After lunch in Panevyzis we set of again on the A2 for the remainder of a long day in the saddle. The total distance for today (Ukmerge to Siauliai) was over 90 miles and the end comprised a series of up hill stretches which were usually very steep and hard work. Never let anyone tell you that Lithuania is flat until they have personally cycled around it. I can tell you from experience that there are plenty of hills :-) In Siauliai we stayed in the Tomas Hotel, which on the outside was very unappealling but which turned out to be an excellent hotel with good rooms, great staff and excellent food and beer. We spent the evening with two Rugute families and their children and had dinner at one of their houses. Dinner was a ... read more

Needed the sunblock as it was a scorcher - my knees are still red. Stopped off in Radviliskis to meet a brave young girl along the way. She had drawn some pictures of us on bikes and had a little porcelain gift for each of us plus the mother had brought some hand made cheese. We had a few piccies and then headed off to Siauliai (sounds like Showlay - well it does to me). Needed the escort for a long part of the journey as it was a new motorway that they were building...seemed to be on a gradual incline forever finishing off with a mammoth climb - just typical. The scenery and landscape has been amazing and it will hold memories that I'll keep forever...and it's only day 2! We had to sprint to ... read more

I've just had a wonderful time at a meeting of some Rugute families this evening. Most especially some of the children playing Lithuanian instruments and some pictures they painted for us. My contribution, following the chicken soup and some cakes was to organise the football and then finally be on the winning side of the Basketball. We all had a great evening though I was smarting from the 94 miles and the sunburn on my legs, I obviously didn't get the sunblock in time!... read more
