Hi Everyone-Today was another great day. The weather was warm and there was no rain and my cold is much better today. We sailed into Livorno, Italy, and this is from Mom: Livorno belongs to the region of Tuscany which incorporates the west coast area of central Italy and includes the culturally significant towns of Florence and Pisa. We had an organized tour of the region and went to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa which I really thought was great. I looks like it's going to fall over any minute. We took the classic photos of us acting as if we are holding the tower up and trying to push it down, it seems to be the thing to do when you go there! We then went to the Cathedral next to the tower which ... read more

The name SeaDream is pretty apropos for this vacation. Both the ship and the ports are so incredible, we are just continually in awe. Perhaps the best illustration I can give you is that I heard Kelly say she no longer wants her ashes strewn from a helicopter over Nordstrom, but she wants them thrown over a bluff on the Amalfi Coast. Now don’t take that to mean Kelly has forsaken shopping as her favorite pastime because the shopping here is superb - both small charming shops with examples of local craftsmanship and Rodeo Drive like boutiques with brands I’ve never heard of, but are commonplace in Style and People magazine. That said, the beauty of the coast line and these ancient towns and villages is really indescribable. Most of the story of Sorrento can be ... read more

Well, not that I saw any flowers here, but anyway... Florence for me was only okay, I was a little disappointed. Bad to start this journal on a slightly sour note I realise, but here is how things went for me. I arrived in Florence around 2000 on the 2nd, and very quickly made the move to check in my backpack for safekeeping at the train station, since I didn't have a room booked until the 3rd. I grabbed what has to be the best McDonalds I have ever had there at the station, it tasted really good. McDonalds tasting good, seems like and oxymoron I realise, but the patties were piping hot, the condiments were just right, and the buns weren't crushed, they were quite fluffy. I really enjoyed it, haha. Anyway, after a bite ... read more

In the small town of Sacile, in the northeast region Italy known as Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, I entered this world. For 4 months I lived in a small town named Grizzo at the base of the Dolomites. It was about 1 hour north of Venice, 1 hour west of Slovenia, and 1 hour south of Austria. It was beautiful. I saw a city with a whole bunch of canals and pigeons and it was in the land of Amarone outside of Verona that I was introduced to wine tasting. Well, I didnt get to taste the wine, but got to know the nice and interesting people who made it. Unfortunately, I was not only not allowed to drink the wine, but not allowed to eat the cheese, the pastas, the prosciuto, the pizza.......just milk for me. Daddy would ... read more

June 5th, 6th, and a little bit of 7th, 2005 I had a 48 hour day today, it was nuts! Left Regina at 2:30, arrived in Calgary by 3:40, W-A-I-T-E-D … Then Anne came at 6:40 and we hopped on the plane and took off at around 7:40. We got to London early by about 45 minutes, so the flight took a little over 6 and a half hours. There was very little “night,” as we chased the sun right across the earth, but it was really neat seeing Ireland and England from the sky! We then took a bus from London Heathrow to London Gatwick and w-a-i-t-ed (the flight was one and a half hours late!) … We then flew into Venice and landed at 10:22 pm. When we walked out of the airport, it ... read more

It was a little tough getting up today because neither of us slept well less night due to the heat and then to the crowing birds that seemed to be perched outside our window. However, since I love to run in foreign places, I drug myself up at about 8:00 and headed out the door with my map and running shoes. As I mentioned, the hotel is really well located and I was able to run straight down the Via Del Corso to Piazza Venezia, probably our favorite of the monuments in all the Piazza's in Rome. It is only a couple of hundred years old (young for Rome), but it is really magnificint. From there it was only a few blocks to the Coloseum right past fantastic ruins of the Forum. I took a lap ... read more

Hello all, Just another quick email from me while in Florence. I am having an awesome time and everything over here is great. I am becoming very familiar with the streets and I often find myself getting mad at all the tourists; because as you know I am now a Florentine. The weather is beautiful although a little humid, but I am dealing with it. I was presented with the option to go to Paris, however I think I am going to pass it up and come back with my best friend, my sister. I hope all is well and that you are not missing me to much, because I may just not come home. I will try to email when I get a chance, but other than that take care. Steph.... read more

Last night I had dinner (homemade pizza!) at Stefano's with him and Lucia for his mom's birthday. It was really fun to be with a family. It was them, his mom, her boyfriend, Stefano's sister and her boyfriend, and then a couple who I think were neighbors. We ate and everyone talked really, really fast, but I actually understood most of it which is amazing and very encouraging! One thing about being immersed in another culture and language is that it is the best way to learn a language but its also completely exhausting because you are constantly thinking and translating in your head and it just gets exhausting! But i was glad I could understand. I have a hard time understanding Stefano because he talks soo very fast, but I think I realized that he ... read more

Hi Everyone, Hope all is well! Today we sailed into Naples, Italy. We arrived at 7:00a. and we had a private van with a driver and a guide. First stop was Pompeii and here is a brief description from Mom: An ancient Roman town that was buried along with it's 2,000 residents in 79 AD when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried the town in ash and pumice and lava. Our guide explained all of this to me today as we walked through the town. I loved hearing about the history and I saw what I called "the zombies" which are acually preserved casts of actual victims of the eruption. It made me very sad to see them because you can see how frightened they were by looking at the expressions on their faces. They all looked ... read more

Today is a travel day and not much else. We slept in and grabbed some breakfast at a nice outdoor cafe just a few steps away from our hotel. You'll see from the pictures we got one more ride out the James Bond door into our awaiting water taxi. Our train ride from Venice to Rome was delightful as the scenery was great and we met a nice young couple from Nashville who had planned their own trip to Italy and had been to Bellagio (on lake Coumo) then on to Venice and they were travelling on the train with us, but getting of in Florence. We gave them a great deal of advice from our previous trips and we shared stories about Venice. They told us about the great tours and we told them about ... read more
