How is Christianity a part of Italy?

http://www.justlanded.com/english/Italy/Articles/Culture/Religion-in-Italy

Christianity is a hug part of the Italian culture. In Italy there are approximately 700,000 Eastern Orthodox Christians. Italy has had 2,000 years of christianity. In the Vatican of italy lies the home of the Roman Catholic Church. An interesting fact is that in Italy they mint coins with the face of the pope on them. The catholic church remains at the centre of the Italian Society and Political power. Every town has at least on Catholic church.

I can come to the conclusion that in Italy Church is very important. I came to this conclusion because of how serious they take everything related to their churches. They make sure that church is available everywhere in order for people to be able to attend and praise their god. They also praise pope by minting his face on to some of their coins. I would assume that Italy is an extremely religious place when it comes to Christianity.
