Just like every other day of this Italian summer has been (with the exception of the Venezia and Lido di Venezia spiaggia day...), most of the day was just relaxation at the house. My morning: --Sleep --Wake up, shower, eat breakfast --Have a nice conversation in Italian with Lucia (the cleaning-lady who, as you may remember, does not speak a lick of English, so it was challenging and quite confidence-booster!) --Read some captivating chapters of Clockwork Orange --Read a whole newspaper article in Italian about scientists finding the source of some deadly E. Coli outbreak in Germany... It was interesting, and it took me a half an hour to do it. --Watch two enthralling episodes of House on my laptop (Ok, it was a two-part episode that was extremely intense! I had to watch them both ... read more

Well today marks exactly 2 weeks left here in Rovigo, Italy for me. It's amazing how two and a half weeks have already flown by! (And a miracle how I have kept the patience to write an entry for every one of those days plus 3!) Well today featured a common activity in the United States, but with a little bit of a twist: swimming. At around 11 this morning, Lucia took Paolo and I down to the swimming pool and dropped us off there for a while. Now, unlike the swimming pools in Eaton or other little community pools or municipal pools in America, this pool complex was GIGANTIC. I mean, inside the building alone was 4 or 5 pools (from baby-pools to lap pools) and then you walk outside and there's two more--one being ... read more

Well once again, today was a day where we didn't do much at all. But I'm going to be very careful with this because whenever I say I didn't do much in a day, it ends up being one of my longer posts. So I'm going to give myself and you a bit of a break today, and this entry is going to be pseudo-short. Just like yesterday, we didn't do much all day until this evening. I spend most of my day studying some Italian, watching some "Improv-a-ganza" online, playing wii with Claudia, and reading the crazy book known as "Clockwork Orange". That was all fine and dandy. Well you all remember Davide, whom I met and talked about yesterday. We were supposed to meet up today at around 4 in the afternoon just to ... read more

Monday, June 13th, 2011. It started out as a lazy day. Not much to do. Not much going on. The sun wasn't even out--only the pattering of soft rain on the terrace. The only people that were home was Paolo and I... and the cleaning lady, Lucia. When I finally woke up to the sound of cleaning in the kitchen, I made my way towards the sound. There she was- Lucia- wiping off the stainless steel counters of the Sasso kitchen. I paused at the doorway... she looked up and gave a cry of fright. "Stan!" she said. "Dispiace" I replied (sorry) Then she beckoned me towards the table where a placemat sat, saying "vieni" (come). Lucia doesn't speak English. So this was my chance to try out my Italian. "Per colazione" she explained "Oh si, ... read more

So it's a Saturday. That means that there was not much going on during the day until night when everyone comes out. So throughout the whole day, I was struggling to find a title for today's entry. Here is an overview of my day (as usual), as well as the other ideas for a blog title that I could have used besides "American hot chocolate is LAME". "Pioggia". I didn't use this one because I've gotten complaints that I talk about rain so much in my posts when it rains in the USA too. Well, yeah, but it's different. You're in ITALY when it's raining. So the rain is a lot warmer and the atmosphere a lot more peaceful and natural and foreign, even with the lightning and thunder. So I woke up this morning to ... read more

Tempi moderni. The theme of today's entry. "Tempi Moderni" means "modern times". Today was the first day of summer for the ragazzi (kids, children, young folks, etc.) of Rovigo. So everything we did today was an example of "i tempi moderni". In tempi moderni, I actually got to sleep in, get more rest that I usually would on a Friday. In tempi moderni, I had something for breakfast besides cereali.. (small toast squares with some kind of tasty spread) In tempi moderni, while Elena and Nico were working, Paolo and Claudia's nonno (granddad) came and picked us up and took us to their house on the other side of Rovigo. Including the ride there, we did many things, like... ---observe an argument in Italian between Paolo and his granddad about leaving the window of the car ... read more

Title: "The last day of school and water fights!" So today, as many of you loyal readers may know, was the last day of school here in Rovigo, Italy. Let me tell you that what happens after the school day ends is a lot more different that what happens in Eaton, Co. Well the day itself is somewhat normal I guess... in the first class, English, we just spent some time looking at some YouTube videos of the lyrics of some famous English songs (We Will Rock You, Circle of Life, etc.). Then we went to "la palestra" (the gym) for the P.E. class. This is a completely different experience than in the United States. We all got changed and then when we were in the gym, we had to wait for, oh, 15 minutes until ... read more

Hmm... the second to last day of school... again.... Except this time I don't have the pressure of writing a speech or anything on my shoulders. So, it is a pretty relaxing thing! However, in the past 2 weeks, I have gotten to know a lot of Paolo's classmates pretty well, and I will miss them after tomorrow. However, through the miracle (and curse) of Facebook, we can still keep in touch. That way, I can practice my Italian with them via Internet. But hopefully I'll be able to see them all a couple times before I leave to come back to America. Also, they had an extra photo of the class that they offered me . Because they stay in one classroom all day, this is their version of a yearbook, where they pass around ... read more

Rain, rain, rain.... That's all it did all day... is rain. But that's ok! I don't mind it, really. Mi amo la pioggia! (I love the rain!) Here's the funny thing about the rain... I think the Italian culture is afraid of getting wet. Just like cats. Hence the source of the Blog title. I think Italy has a higher "umbrella-per-capita" than they do Euros-per-capita. Seriously, when there's even so much as a sprinkler watering the lawn, the whole town whips out their "ombrelli" (umbrellas) and wields them like they're up against Justin Bieber (the Italians hate Justin Bieber more than they hate imitation pizza. At least I think they hate that.) But besides that, it was a normal day in Rovigo. At school today I worked on learning the Italian articles (our words for "a" ... read more

Ho compiti per casa. (I have homework). What in the world...? As I have said several times before in these blog entries, I AM NOT A STUDENT! Ok and it would have been better if it were in Italian so I could actually learn some of the language from it, but NO..... it's in English! For English class! Ugh. Since I don't have to do anything, I think school is the easy part of the day. Normal school day schedule: -Wake up, shower, breakfast -Go to school, struggle to understand the teachers, and teach myself Italian. -Go home and do stuff -Sleep Today's schedule was the same as any other school day, except the English teacher took advantage of me being there. Here's how it came about. Before English class, there was the philosophy and history ... read more
