You might be thinking, what? Life is hard? Why, Stan, would life be so hard in Italy? Well, here is the reason: I just thought it sounded like a catchy title to today's entry. It is Sunday, meaning that it is the only day of the week that there is no school. So I felt like I did absolutely nothing today. I mean if I really think about it, I did do a lot, but comparatively to the past week, not that much. I could probably do today's entry fairly quickly. There is a good side and a bad side to this. The bad side is today's entry will boring probably. The good is that it will be short if it is boring. Before I get started, in reference to my "Venezia!" video from the 3rd ... read more

Happy Festa Della Republica! Today is the 2nd of June, which in Italy, signifies the anniversary of the birth of the Republic in Italy. So, basically, today was the Italian 4th of July. Except there weren't any fireworks. Nor peach ice cream (if you catch my drift). Oh well, it's still pretty cool I was here for it. Apparantly, according to Wikipedia (which I read in Italian ) after WWII, on June 2nd and 3rd, 1946 the people of Italy took a vote whether to have a monarchy form of government or a republic. When the majority voted Republic, the Savoia family ahead of the monarchy that would have been were exiled, and WWII fascism was gone forever! Take that Mussolini. But anyways, wherever you look around you can see Red, Green and White flags hanging, ... read more

This morning I woke up. Ok. Yeah. Well that's kind of expected, right? Dumb statement. Not really. Because I didn't wake up to the light in my room... I woke up to a huge thunderstorm! Muah-ha-ha-ha.... No but really. I woke up and it was pouring rain. There were flashes of lighting and after a pause, roars of thunder that shook the building. It seemed we were right in the middle of the storm. I was all excited because I love thunderstorms, and I really wanted to look at it through the window... except I couldn't roll it up. Now here is one thing I haven't talked about yet--their shutter system/air conditioning system is quite.... different from what we have in America. Instead of blinds and cooling systems, they have big walls of metal that roll ... read more

So once again, school. Today went a little differently however. I got to school and they actually had a lesson instead of just no teachers and oral testing. I'm not sure what the official name of the class was, but I thought it was interesting. You know the Divine Comedies by Dante Alighieri? Well, at their 5-year high school, they teach that trilogy as it's own class pretty much. The 3rd year they read "Inferno", 4th year "Purgatorio" and 5th year "Paradisio". Well, Paolo's class are 4th years, so we spent a whole hour reading, translating, explicating, examining, and doing backflips with the "Purgatorio" portion of the Divine Comedies. Ok, well, they were doing that. My main goal was to, instead of comprehending the book, to comprehend the teacher. In order to get what Dante was ... read more

What can I say about today other than, "Holy Crap." I woke up pretty early (around 5:45 Italy time) and couldn't go back to sleep--I was nervous because today was my first day of school. After I took a shower, Elena offered to make me some eggs. So I oblidged, but then she wanted me to teach her how to make scrambled eggs (I still don't know whether or not she ever knew how to make them in the first place). So I basically made my own eggs this morning before going to school. Elena told me she makes omelettes, but only for lunch. Huh. Gotta say, I don't know if Italians have their meals set straight. Now I can't remember if I explained the schools in a previous post, but I'm going to talk about ... read more

Well when I posted my last blog entry is wasn't too late in the day--a lot had happened since then. First of all, Elena dropped Paolo and I off downtown somewhere, where we walked around for a while, him showing me the interesting buildings in town. The funny thing is, after only three or four buildings, he said that was all that was interesting. That is when I had to explain that everything here is interesting to me since it is all hundreds (even thousands) of years old, compared to home where the oldest thing in Eaton that is still standing is probably Eaton High School. (Post a comment if you think of something older in Eaton. I thought the old sugar factory too). We stopped by this old looking playground surrounded by a big brick ... read more

It has been a long day(s) for me. I don’t know if I should name this blog day I or day 2 because with the flights and all, it was like a seamless transition. All I can say is that I have been awake (not including small bits of dozing) for nearly 25 hours. With that being said, let’s get started. First is first, I got up real early this morning to be at the airport at 7:40 A.M.—which is 2 hours before I take off. My mom and I thought that we had to be there 2 hours early, so as we showed up at the American Airlines gate at 7:38, we thought we were right on time. However, it turns out we only needed to be 45 minutes early, so we woke up way ... read more
