Today was our first day in Tuscany and knowing that we would need a little break after Rome, we arranged a cooking class at the Villa. At 11:30 we donned our aprons and reviewed the menu: Ravioli filled with potatoes, nutmeg, parsley and parmesan; Chicken “Hunter Style,” with garlic, rosemary, sage and wine; and Panna Cotta, a custard-like dessert. We started with Chef Hanna, who helped us prepare pasta from scratch. When the pasta was completed Chef Anna, a Scottish ex-pat, arrived to help us prepare the chicken and the panna cotta. When we were done, we moved out to a patio overlooking the beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany, poured some wine and enjoyed our home-cooked lunch. As much as we enjoyed Rome, when you are in the city you put up with a certain amount of chaos. After all that chaos, we were ready for some peace and quiet ... in Tuscany. We rose early, had breakfast and caught a taxi to the train station, where we arrived in time to have a leisurely cup of coffee before our fast train departed for Florence. As we enjoyed our coffee, Karen suddenly asked "Did anybody get our Passports out of the safe?" You see ... at the Hotel Campo de Fiori (which is a fantastic hotel) there are no safes in the rooms ... so we left our Passports and our extra cash in the hotel safe ... where they remained ... long after our departure. Hello! Tuscany delights...there is no other way to describe this locale...Villa Mangicone is a restored villa with magnificent views of the vineyards, olive gardens and the most amazing vistas - I am sure that our photos will not do it justice. We arrived in Firenze (Florence) by train from Rome, which was a beautiful way to travel. We taxied just 25 minutes out of the city to this beautiful vinyard and restored villa...it is something right out of a fairy tale. Please google the establishment www.mangiacane.com to see the photos and descriptions...I do not think that my descriptions after our afternoon of wine tasting on the terrace will do it justice. :) This is a place that I would love to return to with Scottie...it is a countryside teaming with birds, flowers, herbs and the aroma ... read more
