I've no doubt Dickens himself would have loved the conference banquet which took place at the Studi d'Arte Cave Michelangelo. Naturally we all dressed up in our 'glad rags' determined to thoroughly enjoy our 'night of nights'. On a beautiful Italian summer's evening we enjoyed nibbles and drinks which were available outside the studio while inside, tables were set up surrounded by many marble sculptures for us to admire, Each round table of ten was named after an Italian city; ours mainly seated a mixture of Australian and New Zealander Dickensians. The food and wines were superb, there was wonderful entertainment by the students of Liceo Musicale Palma, Massa directed by Professor Paulo Biabcalana and we all enjoyed brilliant fellowship, managing to dance the night away before the toasts, speeches and singing. Oh what a night! ... read more

After a train journey of almost four hours I arrived in Carrara to attend the Dickens Fellowship Annual Conference Dickens, Art and Landscape. After a short wait at the station, Chris from Bowral and Sue from California, who I was sharing an apartment with, also arrived. A taxi ride soon had us deposited in Mazzini Square from where we walked to our apartment situated in the medieval part of the city where we had somewhat of a shock; there were thirty one steps to lug our suitcases up to get to where we were staying for the week! The other shock was that there was NO WiFi! Getting over those slight set-backs we were soon settling in; Chris and I in the bedroom with two single beds while Sue had the bedroom with a double bed, ... read more

After crossing the Appenines from Lucca, we explored the Garfanana Valley which runs between the Appenine Mountains and the Apuan Alps. Atop one of the mountainous areas, we saw an amazing church in Barga. (St. Cristophanos, I think). It was constructed from 900 to 1200, so is probably the oldest we have seen. I noticed that the arches inside were Roman, rather than Gothic. Altar sculpture looked Byzantine. Windows were a translucent alabaster which may have predated stained glass windows; or maybe were used because they are lighter, cheaper, and less fragile than stained glass. It would have been difficult to transport such precious cargo. After lunch of local specialties (cheeses and cold meats) in Castel Nuovo, we drove up a very narrow, steep, and winding road to a marble quarry at Fantiscritti. You have heard ... read more

After we left Pisa, Filippo then drove us to a little town by the beach called Marina di Carrara, where my family is from. It was such a delightful experience and what a beautiful town! We had lunch right on the bluest of blue water at a seafood restaurant. The weather was so nice too, as it was much cooler and breezy by the water. I've now had my second "ok maybe one less glass of wine next time" experience, which is pretty good considering we've had wine with every single meal. Even Anna has been having a couple sips! …and…we might have had gelato…again… I was so glad that we were going to be near this town at some point during our trip, as seeing where the family is from is just really something I've ... read more
