It was a fairly slow start to the day as I was feeling a bit shady after last nights dinner! Headed into town around 2pm to look around before we had to marshall for the opening ceremony. Caught the train in and walked across the Po River to a large memorial, took some photos and then had a gelati. Wandered back to the Piazza Vittori Veneto and did a lap of the shops. The atmosphere was amazing with athletes from all over the world wandering around. The rest of the team arrived around four and we started taking photos of all the different teams and outfits. We all put on Australian flag tattoos and they were also very popular with the volunteers. There was entertainment till around seven when we were asked to make our way ... read more

Today was our first day of competition, with our game set for 4pm at La Loggia, so we had a relaxed morning except for those who had to register. Wandered down to the markets at the end of our street, bought some fruit and got organised. We caught the tram and bus into the registration centre to get the charter bus to the field. It was about a half an hour out of Torino in a small town. It was a little cooler there. We were met and escorted to the change rooms. It was a nice field and the volunteers were all very nice. We played Vicsens from Victoria (who only had eight players and were using a player from another Australian team to make up their numbers. We were soundly beaten, 13-1, but we ... read more

We headed to Torino down a different route, every bit as beautiful the other roads we have travelled in this area. We arrived at our hotel, our home for the next eleven nights, around 12. Said goodbye to Emily, Jemima and Erin, who will head home in a couple of days from Milan, and checked in. Once unpacked, I sat in the lounge in the foyer and caught up on e-mails etc while waiting for the rest of the team to arrive. At around 3.30, 6 of us headed in to registration via the metro. Found our way a with a bit of help from a local and joined the line. Dad and John got taken off to the officials line and were done a little quicker than us. Despite the line looking long it did ... read more

We headed into Alba after a breakfast of yoghurt, fresh hazelnuts and chocolate cake. It was another gorgeous drive. We went straight to the Ferrero Rocher factory but were not able to get a tour, there was not even a shop. There were four very disappointed young ladies! Ferrero also make Kinder and Nutella. We drove into town, parked and walked around the town of Alba. It was nice with lots of churches. We had a look in some shops and had a focaccia for lunch, as they are known for them in this region. It was very nice and the owner was happy to practice his English. When the shops opened after siesta we looked for formal dresses for Jemima and Erin. We had success for Erin but no luck for Jemima. It is very ... read more

Packed and trudged up the hill to the car, we were all soaked by the time we got there! After some tricky manoeuvring to get the car out we headed to Genoa. As we headed up and out Erin looked out and saw a whale. We decided not to go into Genoa as it had steep, windy, narrow roads! Kept on and stopped for lunch by the sea just south of Savona at Alhissola. We had, surprise surprise, pizza and pasta, except Mum who had a salad, which she didn't like. We then headed to Bossolasco where we had booked rooms at the Bella Vista hotel due to a review on the Internet. We chose Bossolasco as it was close to Alba, the home of Ferrero Rocher, which we wanted to visit. When we drove in ... read more

We had had a very comfortable 3 nights in our apartment in Milan but it was time to move on and France is beckoning. The day dawned with that European haze you often see when there is a bit more cloud cover around although it is still warm. With some difficulty I extracted Cindy from the small secured car park where she has stayed for our 3 nights here. The entrance to the back yard car park was very narrow and just wide enough for the car with the mirrors out to pass through. So with Luigi out on the busy narrow road on the blind corner I made it after a couple of attempts to keep the car dead straight in reverse. We wanted to stay clear of downtown Milan as we drove west and with a ... read more

Our next campsite was Conca d'Ora near Verbania on Lake Meggiore. A really nice site with a small beach on the lake. We settled in for a week. We had done no washing since leaving home as we could not hang anything to dry. Conca d'Ora was our 'heaven'. Michelle was soon sunbathing on the beach and Terry washing and hanging out clothes. "the world has gone upside down" someone remarked. This was how we lived for the next few days. Then being advised from afar we set off on our bikes for Stresa which was nearly 6 miles away. We had never heard of it but what a lovely place. Some really exotic houses and hotels, none more than the Grand Hotel des Isles Borromees which was made famous by Hemingway's 'Farewell to Arms'. Buongiorno from Turin, Brendon and I loved being back in France. We managed the language well, the food suited us both and the culture is one which we appreciate a great deal. We loved poking around the old buildings – I am sure you have seen the evidence in our photos – we even love the pace of their life. It was tough to leave France. The French stop for lunch and make an occasion out of it. There is a ritual that includes going to a restaurant or home and a proper meal is consumed. Wine is included and there is always more than one course. I guess, it is a little like a siesta in Italy, only it does not include sleep, it includes food. Very French!!!. About the only thing that annoyed us ... read more

Ciao belli ragazzi, Well tomorrows the big day of my move to Feltre!! Spent my last week in Ivrea eating cake, cake and more cake with Jo (the housekeeper) really going to miss both her and Adri who comes in the afternoons, as we all keep each other sane and cover for each other if needs be. Jo even bought me a little leaving present, which was really nice of her. Went to Balla with Jo twice this week and had the ‘Torta 900’ again, it’s soooo good. If I had discovered it 5 months ago when I first moved here I would definitely be morbidly obese by now. Looking forward to a new area, new people and new challenges. Although I did Google Street Map my new address and found that it’s in the middle ... read more

Hello England, Hope everyone's had a good week, just want to say well done to my bff Sau Fun Kans on completing a 10k charity run this morning. This week has been busy for me, had to take the cleaner to the Italian equivalent of A&E on Monday morning as she had a really bad type of flu, then spent the rest of the week doing the cleaning for her. I'll tell you something the Italian NHS is just as bad as in England, they left her lying on a bed in a corridor for hours, luckily she seems to be getting better now. This weekend all I've done is visit the extended Italian family. Yesterday (Saturday) we had lunch at the parents of the mum and today we had lunch at the mum of the ... read more
