After a peaceful and lovely visit to Soave. Our next visit was one of complete contrast. War and its consequences. In our own country we stop at small and large war memorials erected by a grateful community to honour its war dead. We do the same at small villages in France and Belgium. We have stopped at the Menin Gate for the nightly ceremony of the playing of the Last Post. We have visited huge monuments in Italy which are beautiful in a very sad way. The enormity of war and death smacks you in the face when you stand in front of them. There are three monuments to war around Solferino near to Lake Garda.
