So we found our hostel, but since there was a bus strike ended up taking a cab with a girl we met from Australia. We unpacked, we are in seperate rooms which is proving complicated, is washed with face wash today. We then walked down the mountain to Genoa and checked out the city and had food down at the old port, we had pasta, fish, and gelato (fixed price meal) and this punch stuff, its a really sweet liqour which we diluted with fanta. Alex woke up at 3 am, so lets just say this morning has been rough, breakfast which was included was a coffee and rather stale bun, coffee out of a machine like at the bus station, but you could buy yogurt and juice. Luckily the lady at the booth where we ... read more

...With a Friend Waving Goodbye to Italy I was told the city was dirty and anomalous, lacking the breathtaking, characteristic piazzas and palazzi characteristic of most Italian cities. No famous names, but that of Cristofero Colombo, who lived in Genova many of his young years. Few tourists, no famed artists. But other sources have named it the next European capital, famed for its port life and shipping industry. So we give Genvoa a go and arrive in time to find a hotel and take a short walk before it begins raining. First impression is already impressionable. Genova lives on hill, crawling from coastline up and over the immediate ascension, growing long and strong and keeping itself hugged close to its watery edges. Honest and humble, hard working and depressed, aging and serene, this city boasts the ... read more

After a long delay, we're baaack! Sorry to be so long dropping the other shoe and finishing up, but things just had to be prioritized after our return to the US. One of the last places we visited on our world cruise was the coast of northern Italy, where the boot of Italy joins the European body. Venice was on the eastern side of the boot top, and our new destination - Porto Venere - was on the western side. Porto Venere used to be the site of an ancient temple to Venus dating back to pagan times, from which it takes its name. There are tall colorful houses along the wharves, almost like Venice, but then the land rises steeply to an old castle on a rocky point above the city. The English poets Byron, ... read more

Cinque Terre was very beautiful just like a postcard, 5 little villages with colourful houses jotting out from the cliffs its difficult for me to explain in words soon i will put some photos on this site so you can see. It was so cosy that it felt like i was walking in someones house, the locals went about their business and the tourists walked around with their rick steves books in hand. I was so lucky on be there during the week and had a few moments wandering around feeling like the only tourist there. It must be crazy during the high season. On the second day i hiked between the 5 villages, a relatively easy hike and i just followed the path. The place is World Heritage protected and tourists have to pay 3 ... read more

A test run to see how this all works, combined with a recent trip to Liguria. Went down to spend two weeks just relaxing in the sun. Great food, and lots, which is good, as I tend to be able to put away quite a bit of it. Stayed in a self catering home provided graciously, and for not too much by Blumenriviera.a link here:Italy villa rental. It was very pleasant and spent most of the time relaxing, and playing with the dog in the sea. I'll post some more pics later, but here is one from the balcony of the house I was staying in. ... read more

What an incredible wedding ceremony and party yesterday! Angela and Darius put together quite an affair. Angela wore a beautiful red dress and Darius wore a stylish gray suit with a red tie. Darius' grandfather performed a traditional Persian ceremony with foods that were shared with all the guests. I will soon update this with all the details regarding the ceremony. We then had another amazing culinary exprience. The meal consisted of various seafoods, pastas, rabbit and panna cotta. Not to mention the scenic locale, we ate dinner in a windowed dining area. At around 8:30, I witnessed one of the most gorgoeous sunsets I've ever seen. I could barely believe that I was sitting there seeing it. It looked like a painting.  After we were stuffed, we danced until the wee hours of the morn. Hamish taught us ... read more

Yesterdat, we arrived in Moneglia from Genoa after our horrific night trying to get to Stansted Airport. I was dying ... I'd finally kicked my jet lag, and now I had only gotten a few difficult and interrupted hours of sleep. However, when we got to Moneglia, we had to explore. After getting some food, we wandered a bit and went to the beach to take in about two hours of sun. This led to the grea gastronomic event of the evening. The parents of the bride and groom rented out a restaurant in a quaint little plaza for the evening. We dined on probably seven to nine amazing courses accompanied with glorious red and white wine. The meal took about 5 hours! It was totally worth it! We were so enjoying ourselves, saluting the bride ... read more
