We managed to find a very very isolated place, on the side of a hill...price is right, Wifi is great, a functioning TV, VERY quiet...no other guests, since it is now OFF season...The ride here was terrifying! We made the mistake of driving up from Moneglia, not down from the toll road. A very SCARY road! One and a half lanes and many twists and turns. It is really good that Bill is of the generation that learned to drive a stick shift, because that is what we have. We both think that they have made the gears mesh better, and if he stalls the engine, it restarts itself! It was 7:45 in the morning and about 40 degrees in Moneglia, so we bundled up in coats, gloves and scarves before heading to the train station. We stopped at a bakery that the cute little old lady at the front desk recommended to us to get some pastries. I wish I could find some pastries like these back in Oklahoma! We stopped at a café for some coffee and hot chocolate. It was the only café that was open before 8 in the morning. There was a group of old men who probably had breakfast at that café every morning together. I was disappointed to find that the hot chocolate was similar to the hot chocolate in Spain, which has the consistency of a melted chocolate bar and is too rich for a morning beverage. ... read more

My first impression of Italy was a fun one as they played the Call to the Post song (the song typically played with a trumpet before a horse race) when the plane landed and everyone clapped and cheered for the pilot for landing the plane. The Italian uproar was exactly how I imagined it would be. How fun! We struggled a little bit at first trying to figure out how we would get from the Pisa airport to Moneglia—the small town that we would be spending our first two nights in, but eventually we figured it out. The people at the information desk and the ticket counter were grumpy and difficult to understand, but we found some nice people to guide us to the bus stop.
