How could we forget? Ten years ago we endured the 7-hour flight from Montreal to Nice -- that flight, the cramped legs, the noise that defies sleep -- and here we are doing it again. Only this time it’s Rome. Only this time we are celebrating our marriage, even though it was two years ago. Learning from our experience in 1997, we decided to stay over near the Rome airport the first night after arriving in Italy. We found our rental car quite easily - a small Fiat that burned about 48 miles to the gallon or 17 km. per liter. It was a bit cramped and was a standard, which neither of us had driven since 1999. I went to Ostia Antica, an ancient Roman city (somewhat like Pompeii), which is 30 minutes out of Rome by train. It is quite amazing. There is a 4000 seat amplitheatre intact (check my gallery for the picture), and a full city to see, including old apartment buildings and cellars. You are allowed to walk inside (and in some cases, upstairs of) most of the ruins. It took me 3 hours to get through, although I did not go through every single part of it. I also saw the Pantheon, which is huge, and the Piazza Novana, which is currently the host of an American-style carnival (games, food, etc.). Today we went to Ostia Antica. We walked to the train station at the Piramide from our apt. and met Davide and the rest of the class. We took the train to Ostia Antica, which was the sea port for Ancient Rome (2nd cent. BCE) that was excavated by a digging headed by Musolini (sp.?). It was really cool because it was so perfectly preserved. It had several bathhouses and fish markets, and a huge theater, which I loved! There was a lot of mosaic work in the bathhouses, and their God was Neptune, which made me happy, being the Tri-Delt that I am!
