A sudden decision to go to Ostia Antica today....Sunday the metro & train might be quieter.....I need to say now, there is no such thing as quiet in Rome!! €1.50ea took us all the way out to the original settlement of Rome beside the Tiber River & the Sea. 69ha of ruins, mainly the lower story & foundations of a city that was huge in architecture, forums, baths, city council, amphitheatre & homes. The oldest remnants date to 620 BC. Abandoned 9th Century AD. Like I said before they built some good foundations. Mosaic floors representing the different trades in the Commercial sector next to the Amphitheatre still remain. Lots of photos to tell the story. €12ea entry fee. We met two couples on seperate ocassions to have a wee chat in English & swap stories....they ... read more

We had a lazy Sunday morning...weather was iffy with rain predicted for midday. Deb wasn't feeling all that great...still recovering from the flu, so it was Craig, Freddie and I that went to Ostia Antica...about a 30 minute drive. It's an ancient port built early 3rd century B.C. and almost completely rebuilt in 2nd century A.D. The ruins have been partially excavated and cover a huge area. for more info visit: http://www.ostia-antica.org/touristguide.pdf We spent the whole afternoon there...so much to see. We stayed in that night..I had huge blisters on my feet from the all the walking we did in Rome...it felt good to just sit and chill. Deb cooked a yummy beef roast, Lizzie had her favorite mashed potatoes and Freddie actually ate salad...WOW! After dinner we watched the movie "Ghost Town" and had gelato...doesn&# ... read more

Today was a really nice day. It was around 55 or so out today so we decided to get out and see the sites. Laura, Jordan, and I decided to go to this ancient town called Ostia Antica about 30 minutes by train towards the coast of Italy. Ostia Antica was the port city of Rome. First used to defend the city from invaders and then for commercial purposes, Ostia Antica played an important role in Ancient Rome. After the fall of Rome and the change in direction of the Tiber River, Ostia Antica was abandoned but well preserved due to it being covered in mud. This archeological site is equal or greater in size then the famous city of Pompeii and therefore have some pictures to share with you all. ... read more

Let's start with Sunday. Imagine an area starting at Nobbys car park and running along the foreshore to a line level with Darby st, turn left and go all the way up to Parkway Ave and then turn left to the ocean at Bar Beach. That is the area of the runins of the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. Imagine at Nobbys carpark there is a huge arch and at the corner of Darby and Hunter there is another huge arch and in between are ruin after ruin. Then when you get to King Edward park you find the Circus Maximus. That was our experience on Sunday. It was quite overwhelming. And then to top it all off where Nobbys lighthouse is, you come to the Colliseum. What a day. The Palatine hill was apparently ... read more

April 6, 2008 I woke up too early this morning, and not because I wasn’t tired, because I was exhausted, but 2 of the girls staying in our room were getting ready and were loud, the woman staying was snoring, and there was a dog running up and down the room above us. Not fun! When the girls finally left, Katie and I were able to get ready, go to breakfast, and checkout. The only problem was we had 2 hours to kill before we went to get the bus to the airport. We walked around Ostia, checked out a market, and then walked to the beach. It was fun because now I have been to the Mediterranean Sea. We hung out there for a little bit, before going to the hostel for a bathroom. Then ... read more

April 3, 2008 Finally, time for ROME! After waking up at the right time, because earlier in the morning I woke up because I was so excited to leave, I got ready, packed some last minute things, ate breakfast, and headed to meet Katie to take the city buses- my first time. As soon as Katie got there, the bus arrived and dropped us off close to where we would catch the bus to the airport. The airport buses run on: 45s and: 15s, but the 10:15 never showed. Thankfully the 10:45 came so we wouldn’t have to take a super expensive taxi! We went to the airport, checked in, and went through security before going to our gate. We left Sevilla for Madrid, and arrived an hour later. Once we got to Madrid, we saw ... read more

Ostia is the sight of the ruins of a town from the times of Ancient Rome. I think it was destroyed by the Roman empire as it expanded. It was amazingly beautiful and peaceful there. Ostia (not the ruins, but the town) is actually on the beach, but a couple of Italians told me not to go to that one because the water there is too polluted. I'll take their word for it. Ostia as a historical site, however, pretty much rocks. One of the professors here led the study trip and I've come to the conclusion he knows pretty much everything about Italy. I was really disappointed that I couldn't take his art history class, which goes on-site all over the city. Anyway, he led the trip to Ostia, and I learned quite a bit ... read more

Wow... today was incredible! We woke up and went to Ostia Nord to the beach. We hopped on the train in Rome by the pyramid (right after we got pastries for breakfast)... it was like a 15 minute train ride. We did a little poking around the cute beach town to find out where to go and then hopped on a 5-minute bus to the beach. At the beach we rented three chairs and an umbrella and just relaxed on the beach. This beach was incredible. The sailboats were amazing on the water and the hum of Italian conversation mixed with water sounds was great! There were plenty of topless women, but I could not work up the courage to join in this European tradition. We got an ice-cream cone as a snack and then ... read more

I've been slack and people are starting to email me asking me what's happening. So truth be told I've been having a fantastic time and haven't made the time to update the travelblog. This blog is about a week old, so I'm not actually in Rome anymore, I'm in Montreal Canada. I'll add photo's over the next few days, but for today, no photo's sorry. I had an absolutely wonderful final day in London. The sun finally came out and I spent the day with two of the most wonderful men I have the pleasure of calling my friends - Mark and Gordo. I then went to Barcelona and I'm now in Rome. I think it's all a matter of pictures will tell the best story in this case, because there really has been so much ... read more
