Buon Giorno from Grado, from Camping Villagio Europa an enormous campsite the sort that we really don’t like. It took an age to check in. We were issued with wrist bands, with wifi paperwork at a cost of 3 euros, a map of the campsite and details of where we could park up. There were few people there but at the height of summer you would not be able to put a cigarette paper between the happy campers. We purchased tickets for the bus into Grado and picked up a timetable. The lovely receptionist marked up the bus timetable for us. She showed us the bus stop across the road within spitting distance of the campsite. It’s Monday just remember that fact. We waited for the bus. Without a watch I had little idea how long ... read more

Before we set off for the start of week 2 we wrote down our thoughts on the week = we seem to be trying to mark campsites and work out which we prefer. At the moment would say that it is the quieter sites with perhaps less facilities like bars and swimming pools. More facilities tend to mean more people and that brings with it extra noise. We get a better nights sleep without the families who need all the facilities. Toilets and shower blocks range from excellent to downright basic. Some cleaner than others. I suppose you take your chance with each one. Washing clothes seems difficult at times. I can get them washed but moving on each day means little time to get them dried. I concentrate on smalls as these do dry easier. ... read more

We started the day in style with breakfast outside on the patio in the fresh air, listening to the birds sing. First location for the day was Cividale, the closest town to Carlo’s house in Torreano. Cividale is what I’d describe as a typical Italian town, perhaps mainly for the architecture but also the narrow walkways between the tall very old buildings, with their shutters and flower boxes. They had recently done some restoration work on the town and found on one building that under the surface was ancient paintings on the walls, probably dating back 100s of years. After looking through the town we walked down the ‘Devil’s Bridge’, a grand old stone bridge over the beautiful Natisone River. The river was stunning, with steep cliffs down to the very clear blue water below. We ... read more

Grado is on an island, about an hour's drive north of Venice. It's harbor is in the middle of town, with a canal leading out to the Adriatic Sea. We strolled around town in the evening and stumbled upon some Roman ruins, all lit up with glass walkways over the top. Can you imagine going to build something and digging into Roman ruins? Amazing! We ended up at a popular basement restaurant serving local seafood and, of course, pasta. We noticed several other parties drinking a white liquid after dinner. It looked like milk, but they were sipping it slowly as if it were very strong. The waitress explained that it is lemon sorbet with vodka and citron liqueur in it. We passed. The next morning we went down to the beach for a walk and ... read more
