ENGLISH NAME : Elecampane LATIN NAME: Inula Helenium ITALIAN NAME : Enula NICKNAMES : Horse-heal, Heal, Elfdock, Medicinal Elecampane, Horseman's herb STORY BEHIND NAMES: Inula : Comes from the Greek 'Ineo' which means 'I purge', which refers to the plant's medicinal properties Helenium : Greek mythology tells the story of Helen of Troy who wept as she was taken away by Prince Paris. From her tears it is said that the Elfdock plant grew, and the kidnapping triggered the great Trojan wars. The name Hellena was passed on and over time became distorted to 'Helenium.' Elecampane: In Christian beliefs, this plant became a symbol of healing of the soul after having confessed one's sins. This was because Horse-heal's medicinal powers were so effective it was said to mirror God's mercy in the forgiveness of sins. Hence ... read more

We stayed in Salerno for four days in a beautiful Airbnb with a view of the castle from the rooftop terrace. My only complaint was that none of the other places we stayed in could compare. But it's not ideal if you are travelling by car. We had to park the car a few kilometers away in the free parking next to the train station. And paid parking is complicated (and expensive) - On our last night we managed to drive in to a ZTL zone and got a fine. This one was entirely down to Google maps. I often think how did we ever manage without Google and this is true, but we've also had some epic fails with them. Avis has taken a 50 euro administration charge but so far there has been no ... read more

We drove out of Naples and made a stop at Herculaneum on the way to Sorrento. Herculaneum was a wealthy town, a popular seaside resort for rich Romans, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius, along with Pompeii. It is a much smaller site than Pompeii, not nearly as popular, situated in a valley by the sea and today surrounded by modern apartment blocks. It is better preserved than Pompeii because it was not destroyed by volcanic rocks. It was buried intact under hot ash and the buildings mostly survived. You can see the boat sheds where the remains of about 300 women and children were found. It is estimated that only 20 percent has been excavated. We also meant to visit Pompeii but Herculaneum was enough for us. It was very interesting, there was a lot ... read more

The last 3 days in Italy were spent in Naples, with our home base at Hotel Rex. It was another one without an elevator, but the air conditioning was glorious, as was the breakfast and location - practically right on the sea. Our train ride from Rome included a transfer in Caserta, and some major confusion on my part. It was a pretty small station, and the signs above each platform stayed blank with a scrolling message in Italian. After typing out the message in bits and pieces, my translator app told me that from August 8th through August 29th, all trains between 2 stations (I assumed the one I was at was affected since there were no details on the platforms) were suspended and replaced with buses. After attempting to speak with a few employees ... read more

Cet hôtel, à part ... read more

In college I studied archology for a time, one of several majors. I still love archology and have built this trip around various ancient sites, so it was only natural that we would have to go to Pompeii. I wanted to see Pompeii during my trip here 6 years ago but was so disappointed to have to miss it. We were not going to miss it this time. We hopped a high-speed train in the morning and about 1 hour later we arrived in Naples train station where we had to get onto a commuter train that would take us to the site of the ruins. This was well and good except that we only had 2 minutes to get down to the next track after buying our tickets. We ran down to the track and ... read more
