6:45 - get up, showered and packed 7:30 - breakfast and farewell to Avone & Ron, Catrina & Derek and then Sue and Paul 😢😂 8:00 - leave hotel to walk to Central train station 8:40 - Inter city train to Naples. Enjoyed the view of Mt Etna along the way as I was also communicating with Adele (in NZ) and Clare (in Perth) as I followed the demise of the Swans. At Messina the train went inside a ship. I got off the train and caught up with Paul & Judy and Phil & Sue as we bought an Arancini. Back on the train once we were on the mainland. Decided that this process is not as exciting as it sounds! Really enjoyed the scenic coastline along the way. The train round Mt Vesuvius- two ... read more

30th July Salerno Located on the south western Italian coast and known as the Pearl of the Mediterranean it is the most important city next to the Amalfi coast, with the famous towns like Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and Sorrento. It’s history is recognised by her old University of Medicine which was first in the world. Recent history, Salerno was the capital of Italy which was moved from Rome in 1943 during WWII, called the “Government of the South” for a few short months. The Old Town is full of art and culture, it was exploration on foot trying to avoid being run over by scooters and small cars in the VERY narrow streets. Some tours headed off to nearby Pompeii and along the Amalfi coast road. So a bit of culture finding ABC (Another B*****y Cathedral) ... read more

Not long after school let out, I met with my best friend Dustin in Italy! He was there for a yoga retreat, and some sun and pizza sounded like a great way to start a summer holiday. This was my first visit to Naples, and I did not know what to expect. We met at the port in Naples, and quickly made our way to the island of Ischia. What a sight! The ferry ride was easy, and we made our way by foot over to our hotel, the Hotel Panoramica, which indeed offered a beautiful view of the sea. It was clear on our walk that the island is used to tourists, and the views and sea made it clear why one wanted to visit. Our dinner at Il Gardinia was the first of many ... read more

We left Gaeta on Sunday June 17th at 8:30 AM with the sun shining and the autopilot working and no leaks of diesel – life is good! We didn’t have too much wind but enough to put up the main and the stay sail and headed to our first destination, the Isla Ischia. We were averaging 5 knots with the help of the engine, but later in the day the winds picked up so we slowed down the engine as we did not want to get to the anchorage too early. We have been told that this is a popular anchorage that we are headed to, but are hoping with it being Sunday many would be returning home for the workweek ahead. We will see if this works out in practice. The island we were heading ... read more

The ruins of Pompeii were not what I expected. I expected some rocks and rubble. The reality is there is a amazing, intricate city that was preserved in volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Pompeii had shops, theaters and homes for citizens. This was a fascinating experience. Side bar, had a dinner conversation with an American on the same tour of as Jack and I about our impressions of Pompeii. She said, "I was disappointed because I thought Pompeii would be like what I saw on the Discovery Channel."... read more

The last two days were really amazing. On Friday we arrived in Amalfi, the very famous coastline where the houses are simply built into the cliff to present a stunning picture of the Italian coastline. We took a ferry from Amalfi to Positano, a little fishing village up the coast one-half hour. There we spent the day looking in shops and having a little wine and pizza. Coming from the panhandle of Florida where the sand is so white, the sand here was strikingly black due to the volcanic soil. On Saturday we docked at the port just outside of Rome. Sophie and I both visited the main sites in Rome, so we chose to take a bus into the city and explore some artwork by the artist Caravaggio, which are located in two churches in ... read more

I know we just completed an overland trip to Siena, but with the end of our contract time in Gaeta we decided to do another trip, a shorter one to Naples and to visit the ancient city of Pompeii. We left the marina Sunday morning in order to get to Naples early enough to have time to visit the Archeology Museum. It came highly recommended to us by a few others as it contains many of the original artifacts from the various archeological sites near here as well as from Rome. Our plan was to go to visit the ancient city of Pompeii the next day so thought that by seeing the actual artifacts and learning more about the site before going to Pompeii would be useful. The museum contains a unique collection of archeological items ... read more

Rosamaria and Richard, whom I met about 37 years ago in Seattle, came to Naples from where they live near Bergamo to visit with me and do some sightseeing. We walked all day, except for stopping to eat--no eating on the run. As most of you know I like traveling alone, but I gotta say I loved having company today, and I felt lonely when they left.... read more

I spent the day talking to my ladies and a group of young people who came to visit the elderly. So fun to see the young people paying attention to the elderly. Now I am eating in a real restaurant which I don't often do--octopus salad and eggplant fried with tomatoes. Very good. I'm exhausted from the struggle to stay in Italian all day. More tomorrow when I play tourist with some Italian/American friends.... read more
