Woke feeling fine. However, the Medical Centre said I should stay in isolation till 24 hours after I took the last tablet so I dutifully had breakfast in our room and stayed in the cabin for the morning. We had to abandon our plans to go to Capri so Fletcher headed out to see the city while I waited.
When he returned just before 12 I was ready to jump from my veranda so we grabbed our things and headed to the gangway. On trying to exit the ship (we have to electronically be logged in and out) bells rang and I was told I could not leave. The nice security guard lent me his phone to speak to the front Office. They told me to return to my cabin and the Medical Centre would contact me. I refused and was put through to the Nurse on duty. She said the nurse I saw yesterday had written that I had vomited at 2-15pm and therefore I couldn't leave before then. This was nonsense as the only time I had thrown up was t 2-15AM. After several more words I was eventually allowed off the ship!! I felt like an escapee from
Yatala!!
We walked to the Sightseeing bus and went on a 60 minute circuit of the city. Naples is what I expected. There are some beautiful churches, statues and monuments but it is covered with graffitti and litter. The distinctive red and grey buildings are attractive but too many others are rundown and in need of a coat of paint. We went past the Archaeological Museum which contains many of the artefacts from Pompeii and then weaved our way to the top of the hill on which is a lovely garden containing a palace that used to be the home of the Bourbons when they lived here. The view from here was spectacular and we passed a lovely domed church on the way down.
We got off the bus at a stop that allowed us to wander into the streets of the old town. Here was the typical narrow laneways with the washing hung out from the tenement balconies.I am sure I had seen that in a Sophia Loren movie!! We stopped for lunch in the piazza housing a tall column on top of which is a statue of St Dominic. The church dedicated to him also fronts the square. We dined
appropriately at Cafe San Domenico having Insalata of tuna, tomatoes, greens and olives. Fresh and delicious.
After lunch we walked back towards the port passing the Castle Nuovo on the way.We stopped at the Terminal building for some Wifi time and then returned to the ship with 5 minutes to spare. I now have a feel for the city and want to return to that museum!!
This was to be our last night on board so we went up to the Quiz which we tied for first place and Seth our Quizmaster asked a tie breaker question which was American and thus I lost. However, we have had a lot of fun and have established a strong friendship with Tully and Linda, a lovely couple who live in Oregon and hope to stay with next year when we go to Eugene Oregon for the World Junior Championships. We had dinner with them and made our farewells.
Cruising has been interesting. Many people on board cruise for the lifestyle it offers rather than for the places you see. It gives a glimpse, a taste of what a place offers rather than a full immersion. However, I did get to see Corfu, Ephesus, Santorini and
Pompeii all of which I had wanted to for many years.
