It was a rainy morning as we began our day headed toward the Cliffs of Moher. We passed Dunleavy castle, and when we arrived at the Cliffs ... there was a steady, moderate rain - we had reached the picturesque, popular cliffs with a heavy cloud of fog settling in for the morning. That didn’t deter me though, because I was determined to get something from the experience. While many people were headed into the exhibit indoors, I was curious and so I journeyed out to the cliffs. As I got closer to the water, I was able to get a few photos; however, the visibility was almost nil. Walking from one side to the other for a clearer perspective, a cow’s look pretty much said it all ... “It’s not a good day for this ... read more

“There are no strangers here, only friends you haven‘t met yet,”- W.B. Yeats We left Galway, bound for the small village of Annascaul in County Kerry, in the southwestern corner of Ireland. We passed through really beautiful areas today, and I will always remember the green fields and the stone walls, with contented sheep and cows grazing or lazing in the fields. We left our B&B about 8:30, following breakfast. I had porridge, which was ok, but the best part again was the soda bread. Susan’s full Irish wasn’t as good as O’Neill’s in Dublin. It was a cloudy morning, but the sun broke through now and again. After we left Cong yesterday the weather improved and it was quite pleasant in Galway last evening, with the sun making an appearance. Our first stop was at ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Dingle Peninsula April 20th 2019

The last time I was on the West Coast of Ireland, I experienced the air as so clean, so refreshingly sharp, so sweet, that I gulped. Inhaling as quickly and as deeply as I could, filling my otherwise polluted London lungs from the City with clean Atlantic air. This time was no different. Landing at Shannon Airport, County Clare, I recalled how much I enjoyed the quiet, friendly, no-fuss simplicity of it. The ease with which one disembarks the plane and simply emerges into the fresh Irish air. I was travelling with a friend, we collected our hire car and drove the 170kms from Shannon to Dingle, stopping at village pubs and picturesque stops along the way. By far the most exhilarating of these was Conor's Pass; a 1.5 thousand foot high pass that connects Dingle ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Caherdaniel October 6th 2018

Heading out to dinner shortly. Maybe time for a quick note. Spent the day out in the Ring of Kerry on the Iveragh Peninsula at Derrynane National Historical Park and Derrynane Beach near Caherdaniel, an hour's drive from Kenmare. It’s the family home of one of the most prominent statesmen in Irish history, Daniel O’Connell. Beautiful family home, grounds, forested walkways, and access to one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen. One of the sweet features of the forest was a Fairy Walk, a maze of trails full of tiny fairy homes. Took quite a few pictures to show the grandkids; here are a few. And an archway under an uprooted tree. But the beach, oh my goodness! One of the most beautiful we've ever seen, anywhere! We walked a long way out on ... read more

Long winding challenging drive from Kinsale in County Cork to Kenmare, County Kerry today along the Wild Atlantic Way. Wild is right! Skinny roads, blind curves, no shoulders except for brush or stone walls. And 100 km/hr speed limits posted. All the while driving on the left side of the road, sitting on the right in the car. Ha! Stopped in Bantry to stretch our legs and visit the Bantry House and grounds and eat a simple lunch in the car. And get out of the car! Staying at a B&B above a pub right on the main street in Kenmare. This ought to be interesting. Done driving. Too bad we’re four hours from Dublin, plus still have a 3-hour drive to Galway ahead of us, too. Have vowed no more driving vacations in Europe. Will ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Waterville August 16th 2018

After one of our best days on the holiday so far on Skellig Michael, we did some washing and ironing, said goodby to our pet ginger cat, Labrador dog and Air BNB abode and continued our travels on the Ring of Kerry. First stop was Waterville where the weather was a little better than yesterday so we wandered around the town amongst the throngs of tourist bus visitors all clambering around the sights of Waterville. After lunch, we resumed our road trip around the Ring of Kerry stopping at numerous vantage points including the pass just outside Waterville which gave us great views of the village on one side and the coast with islands on the other side. A little further down the coast near Caherdaniel, we got our first glimpse of the two Skellig’s from ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Portmagee August 15th 2018

We had planned a trip to Skellig Michael more than 7 years ago after camping in Portmagee overlooking Skellig Michael and the smaller Skellig in our campervan in 2011. Skellig Michael is a rock island 13 km off the PortMagee coastline where in the year 500 AD, some ChristIan Monks had commenced the construction of a Monestary. It is also a film location of the last Star Wars movie so the increased interest in visiting the rocky peak has probably made it possible for us to visit this time around as visitation was a no go when we were last year. The swell in the wild Atlantic Ocean almost caused us to miss this trip as we only found out 45 minutes before our trip on whether it had been cancelled or not. They called us ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Kerry » Killarney August 14th 2018

We made an early start on our journey down to County Kerry and tomorrow’s big trip to Skellig Michael (weather permitting). Leaving our suitcases at Kevin and Olivia’s, we packed a few clothes and some food and headed towards Killarney, driving through scenic countryside and using little villages before reaching Killarney, at place where we spend Father’s Day in 2011 with one of Tish’s cousin’s. Killarney was much as we remembered it however we hadn’t discovered the old part of Killarney during our last visit and this is where we would spend the next few hours including grabbing some lunch tucker in a a pub that had been converted from yet another Pharmacy. We eventually found the Killarney tourist information office and grabbed some maps and brochures for the local area and surrounds and then meandered ... read more

Our coffee break this morning was an opportunity to see the thatched cottages of Adare. (View map.) My original experience with thatching was in Chawton, Hampshire, Jane Austen’s home. Thatched cottages are very expensive to maintain. The cottages of Adare were small, with lovely flower gardens inside their stone walls. Across the road was the large stone Trinitarian Monastery church, dating from the 12 century, although what we saw was mainly restored and built in the 19 century. Inside, the polished wood gave a warm character to the stone vaulted nave. Down the road, there was a large shop, designed (it seemed) to tempt grandparents into buying ... read more

Well here it is, my first ever travel blog entry! Now most people start a travel blog when they first start traveling or when they go on a new trip or to a new country, well not me! This is approximately the 28th country I've visited (most of those within the past 7 years when I REALLY started traveling). I'm also already about two and a half weeks into this trip and have seen most of the tourist sights in Ireland I set out to see. You may be asking why I'm starting a travel blog now, well my answer is "Why Not?!". To be honest I never really thought about starting one before - perhaps due to laziness, perhaps due to not having enough confidence in my writing ability, perhaps not wanting to interfere with ... read more
