It’s 7am and damp and grey. I decide to go across to the cosy kitchen and cook a full English whilst it’s relatively deserted. We have a long drive ahead so may be late to camp tonight. We are planning a quick evening meal of potato curry and rice as a consequence. We set off in the mizzle. Our plan is to take a detour around the headland to a place called Hvitserker - it’s supposed to be a pretty drive with an unusual rock formation in the sea…followed by more scenic driving and basking seals. We have reached the detour road. Oh dear, it’s another of those snow chain roads. And the snow chains have definitely been in use - resulting in a completely potholed road. This morning the weather has turned. There is a yellow weather warning on the Icelandic weather website and we’ve also received a message on our tablet from the van rental company warning us to be careful and to always hold the van doors when opening because the wind might rip them off! This is also the day that I have determined to drive the van…can’t keep putting it off however much Ian assures me he is happy to drive. :-) We have a mountain of washing so we stick that in the machine and have our breakfast. We see Yasmin who we met a couple of days ago. She is a Belgian lady who is travelling alone in her own camper. On arrive à Keflavik, les douanes sont une simple formalité mais il faut passer par la sécurité pour sortir de l'avion. Chercher l'erreur. Notre locateur de Land Cruiser nous attends pancarte Fournier en main. C'est le fun! On prend possession du camion et on décide de rattraper notre itinéraire planifié. Nous sautons donc notre journée à Rekjavik et prenons la direction du Skagafjördur via la route F35 dans les hautes terres (highlands) et le désert. Le lien entre Keflavik et Rekjavik est décevant. Rien de spécial à voir. Pour se rendre à la F35 on passe par les attractions touristiques majeures que sont Kingvellir, Geyser et Gullfoss. On voulait faire un brin d'épicerie en ville avant de partir mais rien n'ouvre avant 10h00... Kingvellir était l'attraction que j'attendais le plus de ce voyage. J'ai été déçu. ... read more
