Well… We were successful with the video as Nagy was eager to contribute a myriad of stories from her childhood. Some of the day’s highlights were the Funicular, a step-shaped trolley built in 1870 that was used as a form of transportation down Castle hill. Nagy recalled enjoying the trolley as more of an amusement ride when she was a small child. (Sorry no Picture...) Another site that was special to Nagy was the Szechenyi Chain Bridge (visible in pics of Pest), which was the first permanent bridge built across the Danube in 1849. Apparently my Great-Grandmother once used the bridge as a place to meet my Great-Grandfather before they were married. The church directly in line with the bridge on the Pest side—St. Stevens Basilica--was where they were married. This Basilica is the largest church ... read more

Friday morning was shopping morning, dedicated to picking up a few Hungarian essentials including paprika (the real stuff), Unicum, and some art work from the first half of the 20th century. Of course any Hungarian items like these can be found at the Market Hall down by the Danube but we were keen to venture somewhere new and less touristy. We checked out a few places - none of which were quite what we were after (or weren’t open at the time), but did discover an intriguing artistic part of the city. If you are ever in the market for some antique furniture check out the incredible collection at Pinter (10 Falk Miska Utca, in the V district), and venture into any of the side streets around that area. As with Pinter, the modest exterior can ... read more

April 21, 2006 Well we (Nagy, Mamma, and I) arrived in Budapest yesterday at about 11:30 or so… Liz was scheduled to land 20 minutes after us and we had absolutely no problem finding her—we just waited in baggage claim until she walked by…J From the airport we easily contacted a cab (impossible without Nagy)… Taxis were waiting, but they were charging an arm and a leg just to get into the city… I am supremely impressed with Nagy’s ability to recall a language that she uses only every 10 to20 years. I think she is excited too—giddy almost—wanting to “go here” and “see that,” and motivated to walk everywhere (which she wasn’t in London). Hopefully she can maintain that energy today. Perhaps I should more carefully recall yesterday: So we were settled into our “hotel” ... read more

After our Budapest blow-out, we decided to slow the pace down a bit and took a train out some 160km east to a small town called Eger in Heves County. Eger is at the heart of Hungary's wine region and this increased its appeal. We arrived at Eger station shortly after midday and were greeted by an elderly woman called Kathy who offered us to stay in her home during our stay. As Eger is such a small place we decided that stopping over with an old lady was better than sleeping on the street so took her up on her offer. Her flat is perfectly comfortable and we even have our own living room. Once the rain had stopped, we headed into towna dn had a quick look at the Basilica, Hungary's second largest church, ... read more

What better way to spend a wet day in Budapest then underneath it - in the Buda castle labyrinths. We had no expectations as we had read some good and bad reviews about this attraction, but we actually really enjoyed them. Couldn’t say the same for Kaspar - he fell asleep - must have been the dimly lit caverns or the heart beat resonating through the winding tunnels and up through the wells on the discretely placed bose sound system (nice touch). To get to the labyrinth itself you must descend a long stair case from Uri Utca. The caves are surprisingly long, and together with the partial lighting, dripping water from the walls and low cavern ceiling they were really quite spooky. Strategically placed stone figures and sculptures throughout, and a grotto with red wine ... read more

Caught the metro to Moszkva Square and then the bus to the Libego, a chairlift at the edge of town which takes you to the highest point in Budapest, atop Janos Hill. Kaspar was much more relaxed than Sarah on the open air chairlift, and even enjoyed the ride through the woodland. At the top is a 100 year old lookout tower, from which you can see all of Budapest on a clear day. It wasn’t such a clear day so we could see to the Danube but not much further. The public transport system in Budapest is excellent…there’s a choice of trains, trams, buses and the metro. It all operates on an honesty system, where you buy a ticket from a ticket booth or tobacconist (which are on every corner) and validate it before, or ... read more

We took a train from Bratislava and arrived at Budapest in the rain. It seems that everytime we arrive in a new place, the sky is wet and grey. We walked about half an hour to our hostel, Caterina Hostel close to the Oktagon, which is very quiet but clean and comfortable with exceptionally friendly staff. After our whistle stop tour of Bratislava, we took the afternoon off before heading to check out some of the local bars. Saturday morning and we found the new best hangover cure...Thermal baths. The baths at Szechnyi are set in the centre of a public park a few kilometres outside the city centre and are contained in a large, ancient compex. By now the sun was shining and we enjoyed lazing round in the pools before heading for the sauna, ... read more

Had a great afternoon at Nagymama’s place yesterday. At 92 she’s still going strong, albeit a little immobile. The ancient Hungarian tradition of showing the baby from NZ to all the neighbours was dutifully performed, prior to some fab Hungarian cuisine including wild boar and mushroom stew, which had been recently caught by Marti’s boyfriend…of course they did a tofu version for Sarah, which I have to say tasted nearly as good. Nagy and Eva couldn’t get enough of Kaspar, and he was on form for nearly 4 hours before a minor melt down and falling asleep on dad. Spent the next morning at (or in transit to) www.szoborpark.hu, an outdoor area that houses some of the finest, and seemingly most bizarre tributes to communism from the streets of post-1956 Budapest. It feels unimagineable today, but ... read more

Headed to the Market Hall (which is literally around the corner) first thing this morning to get some fresh supplies. This hall has been used since the 19th century to sell any manner of fresh produce and is packed with meat, fish, fruit, veges, grains, breads, cheese, etc on the ground floor. On the first floor you can buy Hungarian hand crafts and cool stuff like knives and whips, and the Hungarian version of a food court. If you come to Hungary you must try a langos, covered in garlic butter and sour cream, and washed down with a beer - the breakfast of champions! Despite the Market Hall opening at 6am we were a bit too keen and most of the stalls had not set up yet by 7am, so we detoured down to the ... read more

Cousin Marti picked us up from the airport in Budapest yesterday and incredibly we managed to fit all of Kaspar’s stuff in the car. It took mere seconds before we were reminded of the manical driving that Hungarians are famous for. Lovin' it! The family here sorted us an apartment in the middle of town which is just perfect. Its just around the corner from Raday Utca (Raday Street) which is a pedestrian only area full of bars and restaurants. Its walking distance from the river and the centre of town - a great place to be based and easy to get around from. Kaspar was keen to check out the local sights and sounds as soon as possible so we went for a walk along the river this morning. I've been to Budapest 5 or ... read more
