The only Hungarian I know is Zoltan 'Paul' Viski, guitarist with The Jazz Traitors. He's not really Hungarian - he lives in Ealing. Before setting off I asked him what I should take with me as a gift when I visit some of his relatives. 'Curtains' came the reply. That's Hungarian humour. 7.00am. Terminal 5 at Heathrow. Now there's a concept. But actually the chaos seems to have subsided at last, although the staff are understandably jumpy, having been blamed by the management for all the cock-ups. We arrive at Budapest 2 1/2 hours later and are whisked to the Keleti Station for the journey to Eger on the fringes of Bukk National Park. The train is a standard Soviet-era job with brown vinyl seats and luggage racks bolted at a slight angle to the horizontal. ... read more

Hi everyone, Just a quick note today because we haven't been up to a whole lot lately. Yesterday we climbed aboard an overnight train to Hungary. Compared to our last overnight train it was a comparitively short 8hrs, but once again we had to get up early to present our passports (the major drawback to overnight trains). We arrived in Eger nice and early, and set out to explore the city. We started with a great fort that sits just above the city, which was very cool. Unfortunately the long train ride and lack of sleep started to catch up with me and I had to go home for a sleep... my sleep did nothing to make me feel better, and later I developed an upset stomach. At the same time Matthew has come down with ... read more

July 18, 2007 Krakow…WOW!!!! We have just wrapped up 4 days in Krakow Poland. The first word that comes to mind is WOW!!!! It is an amazing, vibrant, gorgeous city. The Polish people are intelligent, beautiful, nice, kind, and loving their new freedom. The energy in Krakow was magnetic….we just loved it! Admittedly, I didn’t want to come to Krakow. I had visions of cold, gray, gloomy non-descript concrete buildings with old grumpy people roaming around. Scott and I even had an argument 2 days before as I once again stressed how much I didn’t want to go there. He had been planning all along for us to come to Krakow…I secretly hoped I would detour him to Vienna for some coffee and pastry eating on the Kartner Strasse. Scott being as stubborn as he ... read more

Hello everyone, Well since I last left a blog we have been to Eger (HUngary), Kosice (Slovakia), staying a night in Miskolc (HUngary) between the two, and Vysoke Tatrz (Slovakia(. To let you know this keyboard is a nightmare, what a suprise, and for some unknown reason will only let me do brackets facing in one direction. Great stuff. So anyway, since I last wrote we have left our original path for one less well known, and with this has come increasing difficulties with language, some interesting situations at restaurants (when the dishes are named in Slovakian/Hungarian and none of the waiters speak english( and a lot of excitement. After Budapest we headed off to Eger, a town famed for its wine. Fantastic we thought, wine and rural Hungary. Unfortunately on arrival we discovered that ... read more

The Fortress of Eger Europe » Hungary » Eger By korossylMay 25th 2007 I'm pretty much living a dream. In 1552, 2,000 Hungarians under the command of Capt. István Dobó engaged the Turkish forces under bashas Ali and Ahmed. When the Turks retreated 30 days later, there were 400 Hungarian martyred... and 140,000 Turks killed. This is one of the most glorious victories in Hungarian history, and was immortalized in a novel by Géza Gárdonyi that has since become required reading in all Hungarian school. This book was pivotal in my own awakening to my Hungarian heritage, and to work day by day in this sacred place is an unbelievable honor. So, I took about 120 pictures, so here's some of them. ... read more

Eger Europe » Hungary » Eger By korossylMay 23rd 2007So, on 05/21 I made it to Eger, and on 05/23 I went on a photo expedition. Unfortunately, I also got pretty tired of uploading photos to this blog, so it's good I didn't take more. The fortress itself, the interiors of some the churches, some more general landscape shots, etc. will be forthcoming.... read more

We crossed into Hungary at a very small border crossing from Slovakia, so small a road we got lost and couldn't find Hungary for a while! Very surprisingly the first building we met in Hungary, about 2km over the border, was a campsite. The campsite was hosting the '11th annual international cave rescue conference' but there was still plenty of room for us. Weather was good so we parked up, got the bikes out and went exploring the local Aggteleki national park. Good cycle through very picturesque hills and scenery. Eger The days drive was through very rural and very beautiful rolling hills of north Hungary, down to the town of Eger. Eger is famous for its wine but its also a very pretty, laid back old town with some lovely buildings. We spent a ... read more

Yesterday on Saturday we organized a trip to Eger by our own. We started at 9 am in the morning. After 2.20h travelling by train we arrived in Eger (northeast Hungary), one of the famous vine regions. During the day we visited the Basilika, the Minareth, the castle, Turkish Bath, ... Later we went to the "Valley of beautiful women" to look for a good vine cellar. It was great here. More than 40 vine cellars. And the vine tasted very good. It was a very nice trip, and very cheap. We only spend 400 HUF for the vine tasting and everyone was drunken. So the trip back was much funnier than the outward journey :-)... read more

Geo: 47.855, 20.0221Met a senior couple getting off the train in Fusezabony (Chuck and Eileen, from Cali). Could instantly tell they were fans of "Rick Steves". We missed our connection to Eger, but luckily for us there were many other connections. Found a hostel in Eger (university dorm rented out for the summer). Luxurious! 2 beds in the huge room, private bath, fridge, microwave ... ended up being only me in there. Had a shower and munched on some dried fruit for breakfast. Off to the cathedral - very unique exterior, almost wouldn't know that it was a cathedral. Listened to an organ concert - 2 euros well spent. The opening song was so cliched - it's that organ song you always hear in cheesy haunted-house type movies. Very powerful sound - you could feel the ... read more
