It is 3:30 a.m. and I am lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. Kristen has somehow managed to remain asleep beside me, but as the roosters and dogs begin anew their incessant calls, I admit defeat and head out to the kitchen. Jetlag has won again. I find that Klara left the small radio atop the freezer playing before heading to bed, so to a curious Hungarian cover of “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da,” I set up my netbook at the small dining table and type until the sun begins warming my back. By the time Gabe awakes and blurry-eyed begins brewing a pot of coffee, I already loath Hungarian radio. Europop, most of it in English, reigns on the airwaves, and my skin crawls with every joyfully soulless, generically programmed beat. It is made by Europeans for ... read more

The boys got to sleep in again today as our first match was´t until noon. We got to the pool a little early again and began with dryland training. This time we scrimmaged a club team from Germany. They were between 17-19 years old and a lot bigger and stronger than us. While we didn´t play our best we held our own for most of the scrimmage. We didn´t keep score but it was probably a tie. They had moments where they looked better than us and we had moments where we were the better team. There was also a long 20 minute or so stretch where nobody scored and since we did not play this match with a game clock we could not sub. The way the German team plays would not fly in the ... read more

I allowed the boys to sleep in this morning as it has been a while since we didn´t have to set our alarms. We were to meet at 11am to go to the pool although they had to be up earlier for breakfast in the hotel. Breakfast is very westernized. Much different from my last trip to Hungary. They had scrammbled eggs and potatoes and sausage and many of the cereals you will find in the in the States. The boys enjoyed it very much but I´d rather they experience a little more of the culture. Maybe when we get to Budapest. When we met at 11, much to our dismise it was raining outside. We proceeded to the pool anyway as we knew this would not stop the Hungarians from practicing. We found a good ... read more

We met this morning before 7am to pick up our breakfast to go and head to the airport. Two of the boys were not up in time and made up for it by doing a swim set later. Both the Rome airport and the flight were a breeze. We gathered all of our luggage and met up with our contact Kate. She led us to our bus and then sent us on our way. Our bus driver did not speak any English. It was about a two and half hour bus ride to Eger and the guys slept most of the way. It was dead silent the entire ride. We got to Eger around 3pm and we were very hungry. We checked into the Hotel Eger Park, which is extremely nice. It is like a resort ... read more

The year was 1552. A great Ottoman army, 10,000 men strong, descends upon the Hungarian town of Eger, besieging its castle. It should have been easy pickings, but the brave townspeople, despite being vastly outnumbered, hold back the marauding horde for a month, eventually defeating the Turks. But the Ottomans weren’t finished yet; they came back forty-four years later to avenge their earlier defeat… That’s the basic story that is told about Eger. But the turn-of-the century writer Géza Gárdonyi embellished the story even more in his 1901 novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon (subtle, that one!). In his fictionalized version of the first siege of Eger, he has the women of town pouring hot soup onto the Turks from the castle ramparts. Although this part of the story seems to have been Gárdonyi’s own invention, ... read more

Eger - Day 2 (June 8) A reasonably leisurely start for our train trip to Eger. My room mate and I managed to find coffee and pastry at a local market near the metro and get back in time to catch a local bus to the train station. The countryside was green and agricultural for most of the trip. Our accommodation was really lovely rooms in small apartment style building. Of course we had a brief orientation, followed by lunch. I’d heard so much about the tradition of cold berry soup (not a desert) that I decided to order this. It was really refreshing with lots of fresh fruit pureed and pieces (including orange) but it was fairly sweet. Oh well, the things we have to try. The town was set out with a lovely main ... read more

I was thinking of heading to Eger as a day trip from Budapest but I ended up making it a stop while going from Kosice to Budapest. I got the 9 something train and got off at Fusesabony where I got the train to Eger. However, I had to sit tight at the station when I missed not one but two trains to Eger. Basically the first one left 3 minutes after I got off my train and the other was totally my fault for assuming that the track would be the same as the previous one - I saw my train pull in and pull out....while I had my mittens performing a skit (I was that bored). Story of my life, really. Thank goodness that the trains are hourly. Got there and negotiated a train ... read more

whew what a tiring day. was up at the crack of dawn again today (perhaps going to bed before 8 again had something to do with it)... jeff made it to 10pm at least. Anyways, off to the train station first thing to see about heading to Eger for the day. After some minor confusion relating to everything being posted in Hungarian only, we bought our return tickets and headed up to the platform. Then we realize that the train we think we're going to get at 830 is actually a fast train which needs a reservation. So we go to the information booth, where the man speaks "limited" (read none) English. He implies that oh yes our ticket is good for that train. We get up to the arrivals/departures sign and realize there is a ... read more

Day 9 (Saturday, September 13th, 2008) We were woken up on the train on Saturday about 7:30 in the morning when one of the attendants brought us our rail passes. We finally reached the station in Budapest around 8:45. Once off the train, we had to find the nearest departure board to determine what platform the 9:05 departure to Eger would be leaving from. The board listed the train as leaving 10 minutes earlier than originally listed, so we both ran to the train as we thought we only had a few minutes; however, when we approached the train, we realized that it was still leaving at 9:05, so we had several extra minutes to spare. The train ride to Eger, Hungary took about two hours. From the tiny train station, we took a taxi into ... read more

24-08-08 Valley of the Beatiful Women and terential rain We spent another day in Zakopane doing very little, just enjoying a bit of a holiday, and left for Hungary early Saturday morning. We decided to drive through Slovakia and continue on to Hungary. The trip through Slovakia was some of the best scenery on the trip, mountainous, and river valleys, and huge forests. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Slovakians are some of the worst drivers in Europe, this however has a lot to do with their road laws. The urban speed limit is 60 kph, and they allow overtaking in urban areas, what usually happens is people overtake you at 90kph in the towns with pedestrian, cyclists, horses sharing the road and then only sit on 100kph when they are on the open road, ... read more
