Feeling a call to nature during my Budapest onlsaught, I packed up for a few days and headed north east. A tip off from a Canadian friend and a burgeoning problem with alcoholism meant I was very keen to check out the wine growing region of Eger. Tantalisingly known as The Valley of the Beautiful Women, I'd heard tall tales and true about this magnificent experience, this "must be sampled" glimpse of rural Hungary... this oasis in the North. "A little hill" my friend had said... with that far away gleam in his eye of one who is recalling great lives lived... "A little hill, and you'll find all you need hidden away behind hobbit door after hobbit door. Just make sure you aren't driving, and take your own drink bottle. They'll sometimes fill it for ... read more

After our Budapest blow-out, we decided to slow the pace down a bit and took a train out some 160km east to a small town called Eger in Heves County. Eger is at the heart of Hungary's wine region and this increased its appeal. We arrived at Eger station shortly after midday and were greeted by an elderly woman called Kathy who offered us to stay in her home during our stay. As Eger is such a small place we decided that stopping over with an old lady was better than sleeping on the street so took her up on her offer. Her flat is perfectly comfortable and we even have our own living room. Once the rain had stopped, we headed into towna dn had a quick look at the Basilica, Hungary's second largest church, ... read more

Aunque ... read more

Eger is known for it's valley full of caves turned wine cellars. There you can buy the local "Bull's blood" wine by the glass or litre, straight from the cask. Legend has it that soldiers drank the wine for strength while defending the town. With their beards stained red, attackers thought the soldiers were drinking blood. I met two American guys in the caves who only had a few hours in Eger before catching a train, so their mission was to drink as much wine as possible in as many caves as possible before they all closed. It had been a few days since I had spoken English to anyone, so they were welcome company for a few glasses of wine. They have some good pics they are supposed to email me, will post them if ... read more
