Today’s virtual two was in two parts, the first a cycle ride which I had taken before but it was still enjoyable although for Adam our virtual guide the high temperatures made cycling quite difficult. Tata is not a large town but it has so many interesting things to see - we started the tour in front of a beautiful twin tower church, next was the newly renovated Esterházy Palace where we could still see areas that still needed refurbishment. Quite a contrast between the Habsburg Yellow and the new Hapsburg Porcelain. Tata Castle, built in the mid 14th-century now a museum and we ended the tour overlooking a beautiful lake where we learnt Tens of thousands of wild geese and ducks spend the autumn and the winter on the lake. The tour was perfectly paced, ... read more

Day 5 and 6 Sept 9,10 2018 Komarno to Esztergom Today we’re headed for Esztergom, the Rome of Hungary, ecclesiastical capital of the Christian church. We took the route on the Slovak side, having been advised that it was probably quieter than the Hungarian side. The route follows the Danube most of the way. The first part was a dyke road, passing Kelemantia, site of a major Roman military camp. We passed the thermal lake at Patince Kupele. The road passes through pretty towns and beaches along the banks of the river. We deviated from the river at Čenkov, inland towards Mužla, where we stopped for lunch and met the Slovak MP, Ivan Farkas, who had visited Ireland many times. At Štúrovo we cycled through an old border control, over the bridge and into Esztergom. The ... read more

Alright so I did nothing these past 3 days - when I say there's nothing to do in Revfulop, there is truly nothing but a beach and a path along the lake, so, that was my 3 days plan. Tough life, I'm aware ;) I put the 3 days together for the blog - it's just easier. I gave up on the hostel wifi the first night. Since I'm in the 'do nothing' frame of mind here is a bunch of random thoughts rather than paragraphs. I'm writing this on the last night while a concert is going on... so I might throw random liveblogging in too. I'll add pictures when I have proper wifi - I'm finally loading this while on a train. train ride was lovely; non-smoking train which is all I can ask ... read more

Even though Lake Balaton is a very popular holiday place among locals, surprisingly there is actually no direct train connection to get there... Or we simply couldn’t find one... And since the last part of our journey included taking a bus from Balatonfured to Tihany (which is under 10km, but no schedule to be found online anywhere!), we just opted for a bus to Tihany all the way from Budapest in the end. At this stage we were trying to take trains rather than buses, simply because it was easy to keep Millie entertained on the train... But since there actually was a direct connection by bus to Tihany... problem solved! The bus was leaving a bit early in the morning but at least we didn’t need to change anywhere on the way. The journey went ... read more

The church bells gave us an early start on Sunday and with the roads being quiet we made good time. Woolly says – once out of Vienna we were greeted by field upon field of corn again before more industrial areas started to appear on the horizon. Thinking to be clever we pulled up for fluids for Ollie and yet another vignette. This was a mistake!!!! It was complete chaos with vehicles queuing onto the express way trying to get to a fuel pump. Ian and Ollie charged towards a smaller line and there we sat, we checked registration plates and it appeared that there was representation from the whole of the United Nations. Bored of this I counted clouds, cars and anything else I could think of to stave off boredom and still we waited. ... read more

Wednesday July 17 –Today was just hectic. I had breakfast in the hotel (eggs and ham – another new one) and then went to the bus station for my bus to Balatonfured, on Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Hungary. I actually didn’t find a place to stay here, earlier on, so after I got there, I took another bus going to Keszthely, a bit further away. The first bus of course had a blood thirsty pack of people trying to all get on at the same time again. But in this case, I saw why. There were too many people, and not enough seats. I got one, luckily, but many people had to stand. Now this bus was by no means direct, so people were getting on and off many times through the journey. I ... read more

Slept really well last night. The room was dark at night with little outside light because of the thick curtains. We woke up early this morning so we could go for a swim. First we went down to the hotels restaurant for breakfast. There was a very strange selection of food – in same buffet style as dinner last night and much the same food too! Vegetables and potatoes from evening meal (probably leftovers!) and meat goulash thing. So we went for a swim, the changing rooms were really nice but open plan. Luckily we were the only ones in there so it was ok. First we went into the big long pool but it was freezing so couldn't stay in long! I loved it, once you got used to the temperature it was ok. As always I woke up really early to pack my suitcase, then did Fiona’s too. I had a look at the window and it was snowing, sadly it didn't settle though. We took our cases down to left luggage and had breakfast. We checked out and sat in bar area in a little group while people came and said goodbye. The South Africans all left together and Gina and Simon left to continue their trip around Europe. A few of the guys staying in Budapest a few extra days and went out to Turkish baths etc. We decided to book taxi on the hotel guest computer to pick us up from Anna Hotel to get to airport on Thursday. Getting worried about train reliability and didn't want to miss flight. Definitely seemed worth it for £20 ... read more

Well, I'm laughing because I can't find the town I'm writing about so I just picked one that began with the same letter. Clueless. On our last day in Hungary we took a bus trip to the 1,000+ year old village of Szentendre. It was pleasant to drive a couple of hours outside Budapest to see the countryside. It is mostly flat farmland with no remarkable topographical features- read that as pretty 'ho-hum'. The village is trying desperately to attract tourists. I would say from the number of tour buses and various languages we heard that they are succeeding. Get there early (around 9:30am) to be before most of them arrive. The village has been pretty much untouched by 'urban renewal' or renewal of any kind except for some paint jobs so the architecture is authentic. ... read more
