Sept. 19 So I am really sorry guys I cannot get my pictures downloaded anywhere and when I do get them working it is very time-consuming so I prob. won't have a lot of pictures on here. Dustin I can't get the one's you sent downloaded. Anyhow, this is a very beautiful city. We met two girls from Belgium today, yes Dustin real Belgium people. They had been in Athens for awhile sot they showed us some of the sights. We first saw the Acropolis. It means something about the top of the city. You can see it from all over the city. I wish I could show the pictures. The Parthenon Temple is on the Acropolis Hill built for the Greek goddess Athena between 447 and 432 BC. Athena was the protector of the city. ... read more

Upon arriving in Athens Kostas came and picked me up from the city, he lives in a suburb called Kareas on the edge of the city beside a forest on the mountain side. Athens city is in a huge valley between two mountain ranges, we headed up the mountain to a perfect view over the whole city to watch the sunrise over Acropolis, it was quite spectacular and something I will not forget anytime soon. Because of the winds the previous night the sky was perfectly clear and I would find out later that I missed a rare photo op since I didn’t have my camera with me. Most days you can barely see acropolis and cant see the mountain range opposite because of all the smog :( That afternoon I headed into the city to ... read more

A hot and sweaty arrival into Athens after standing with our packs on a crowded bus for the 1 1/2 ride into the city from the airport. However, we had a nice surprise at our hostel, Hotel Lozanni, with spacious rooms and extra friendly staff. We found a local giro place for dinner and enjoyed our free shots of Ouzo (a licorice-flavored Greek liquor) at the hostel bar. We had a little old woman who smelled like bananas and barely spoke a word of English in our room. She hoarded all kinds of things in her little bags, and later we learned that she was German--maybe the reason for keeping everything, including spoiled milk! Oh, the interesting people we have shared a room with :) Anyhow, up early to sight-see the next morning. We grabbed breakfast ... read more

Ok, so I know i've been bad, but its really hard to sit down on the net when people are waiting behind you (ah, the joys of free internet at the hostel). So we are now in Greece (athens), but will try to quickly catch you up. We did go to the Picasso Museum (still way back in Barcelona), which was really good, and very interesting (I had no idea he was classically trained so it was good to find out more about him), and didn't go to the animation thing, cos we ran out of time before the Spanish cooking class. Oh yeah, and we bought tickets for the train to madrid, but we could only get tix for the 6.30pm train, which meant we had to waste an entire other day. Spanish cooking was ... read more

To any people other than my subscribers back home who are reading this and who are coming to Athens. If you want a great breakfast you must go to the restaurant called Plaka....in the suburb of.......you guessed it Plaka....which is the old bit of town. The address is 16, Kidathineon St. It is right beside the Taverna Vizantino that the Lonely Planet recommend. I wouldn't recommend it. The waiters are pushy as hell and once they get you seated loose interest and can't wait to get you out again. They litereally accoust people on the street and try to hassle them into the resturant. Plaka Taverna is not like that at all. Tell the lovely waiter Demetri that Dee from NZ sent you. I had breakfast there again this morning. Demetri asked how I was and ... read more

Tuesday 12th. Am starting to love Athens, or perhaps not so much Athens but the wonderful people I am starting to see. This morning I had breakfast at a wonderful little cafe called PLAKA, not far from where I am staying. I liked the look of this place because there were no aggressive touts trying to drag you inside when you stopped to look at the menu, just a sweet old man. I had a large, filled omlette that cost 2.50 euro, a coffee, the cheapest I have seen anywhere so far for 1.50 and Demetris (the sweet old man) gave me free toast, butter and jam. I think he did this because I talked to him...or perhaps he does it for all new customers. Anyway he is totally delightful and the food was great. I ... read more

O M G yes I am finally here in Greece. Don't have much time, it has taken me two days of wandering and only running into a couple of fellow kiwis who are staying at a very swanky hotel that has internet, for me to be writing this at all. Got here safely......obviously. It isn't too hot.......THANK GOD Pavlos is fantastic............THANK GOD. Am staying in a hotel right under the acropolis. Couldn't stay with Pavlos as he is living with his Mum temporarily until he is able to move to Olympia with his new job. He still doesn't know if he can come to Santorini with me. Being self employed here in Greece has distinct disadvantages. He told all his customers he would be off work for a week (so he could come away with me) ... read more

Photos of the amazing dog crossing the road in Athens, along with a copy of previous blog entry about it. "I saw something that both horrified me and amazed me. A stray dog crossing the road, and not just any road.....a 6 lane road chock a block with traffic going far, far too fast!!! I have crossed this road before and have been terrified, even though I have been crossing with the pedestrian lights. The traffic goes so dam fast and generally you can't get across the whole thing in one go so you have to wait in the middle for the light to change again. So I walk up to this crossing point and wait with another couple and this dog comes up and waits beside us. The couple and I just stare in amazement ... read more
