This was about to be a very, very busy day. We were up rather early in order to leave on the bus at 8:00. Our breakfast wasn't as filling as our previous few in Greece. This morning it was back to cold cereal, a couple croissants and watery orange juice. Our first order of business was to drive back up the isolated Tolo road into the larger city of Nafplion. Even though Tolo is the seaside resort where most of the people in our group were happy to stay, Nafplion looked more to my liking. It was also built adjacent to the sea. Nafplion didn't have the beautiful shoreline or bayside restaurants and bars like Tolo, but instead was somewhat sterile-looking in the downtown port area. But in town there was a bustling shopping district and ... read more

Today I climbed up to the Acropolis. I saw the Parthenon, it is most impressive. I wandered around it several times. On top of the hill, it was so windy that I couldn't wear my hat. Fortunately, it's still quite cloudy here. Periodically, the sun is covered by clouds to give us a respite from the rays. But it's just not hot here at all. What's going on? As I was leaving at about 10 am, the multitudinous tour groups started to arrive. They're funny to watch as they hundle around their leader fearing to wander off. However, everything is well explained to them, unlike my tour, which I read from my guide book. Then I walked to the Temple of Zeus. A mostly ruined temple with only a few of the hundred or so columns ... read more

It's cold and windy here in Athens, not what I expected. The flight into Athens was a comfortable BA flight complete with movie that I didn't watch and hot chicken lunch that I did eat. And this was the same price as the Easy Jet flight - no comparison. I am so jet lagged, I am not sleeping when I am supposed to and tired during the day. I am finding this trip more difficult to adjust to. Perhaps because I wasn't well rested before I left. Since it was overcast, I went to the Natrional Archeological Museum. Lots of old things. The Minoan treasures are great. And I saw the death mask of Agamemnon. Somebody check my spelling. There were so many statues from each period of ancient Greece, Archaic, Classical and Helenistic. Truly awesome ... read more

So.... I don't know why everyone says Athens is dirty or ugly or there is nothing to do and no one talks english blah blah blah. Not true at all!! Athens is much cleaner than Rome or Spain and beautiful as well. The shopping is amazing and the people here (unlike in Rome) are sooo nice and helpful and they DO speak english! Basically, I am molving here asap, so all of you will have a great place to visit :) We arrived late and met these 3 American guys on the plane and they are living here for the summer and speak Greek sooo they said they would show us around, yay! We came to our hotel and went to bed after and amazing shower of course (so nice not to have dirty water up ... read more

Hey dudes, We are in Athens! I think you already know that, yes you do cause I told you all about the ferry ride.... what an experience.... It is so hot here, like 40 degrees everyday. We are pretty stoked to see everything here, but we are very stoked to get to a beach on an island where things are a little bit more barable. Yesterday was our first full day here. We went on a walking tour that originated out of our hostel. It was very good as it gave us an efficient look at the city, the best shady spots to enjoy the sites from, and a great commentary from an International Relations grad from Brazil! He knew his stuff and was really funny too. Loads of people on the tour, we met 2 ... read more

Hello to everyone, We have made it without a hitch to Athens! Not to say that we are not exhausted and really hungry though.... So we left you in Bari when we were just about to board the ferry. We were in the 'deck class' so we weren't too sure what that got us... maybe a train sort of seat?? Well we got on the boat, via escalator (holy crap), got up to this cruise ship looking interior with wood floors and a casino and restaurants and bars and crazy stuff, we were told to go upstairs... Well deck class means you sleep on the deck with a plastic roof over top. This is like the top of the ferry that is undercover. All the backpackers were up there. We grabbed a bench so we had ... read more

Hey Contiki crew! Contiki feels like a school camp for adults where drinking and partying are the norm. The difference from a school camp is minimal, excursions are still organised, you make new friends and if you’re lucky you get a new girlfriend...or three. :) I remember school camp was all about hiding the contraband you snuck in and organising midnight feasts with your mates. Some things never change, except on Contiki we swapped the chocolate for a few bottles of Bacardi we picked up at Duty Free. Checking into the Mykonos resort we were lucky enough to get a twin room overlooking the pool and resort grounds from the first floor. With a location like this the only hospitable thing to do was host a party on our balcony with the new crew. The bottles ... read more

Before I continue- to answer my father's question about what I am eating, here is my meals that I have bought since London: Day 1: Airplane breakfast (luxorious), Lunch: bread and hummus Dinner: bread and hummus, pepsi lime Day 2: Bread, water, etc. Bread, water, I had some cookies, and I had some yogurt, but mostly bread and water. I bought nutella today though, I am excited. But I don't mind the food, I just think I need to have some fruit but its hard to find. Oh wait- I did have one good meal with the tour group- mousaka vegetarian for 5 euros, it was really really good. Anyways- Mykines was very old and also full of tourists that came on nice buses. Those of you in Strickland's class know that this was where the ... read more

I can't load pictures where I am now, but I will later. I got up at nine to go on a walking tour of Athens, a bit pricey at 13 euros, but I really didn't feel like going by myself. I met two nice Aussies and we had a sassy British tourguide. We saw all the main sites- the Acropolis, full of German tourists, the Temple of Zeus, the Agora, it was really great. After lunch with the tour group I was sad to go off by myself again because I wanted to go to Nafplio in the south. Its amazing how one place can be crawling with tourists and ten minutes later not a word besides Greek is spoken. I got sort of scared and looked like a stupid tourist getting on bus 051 to ... read more
