Day 16 On our way out of Aahus, I snapped a picture of the soccer balls they had hanging all over the streets. We made our drive to Frankfurt for our last night’s stay before getting on the plane in the morning. It took about 6 ½ hours which wasn’t too bad. About 2 blocks from our hotel there was a soccer fan fest going on. These are parties that are set up all over Germany for the fans to come and watch the games on big screen tv’s. There is beer and weinerschnitzels and all the fans. It was a lot of fun watching with all the German fans. We called it an early night because 6am comes pretty quickly. A side note: When we first got to Germany all these huge signs said "Ausfahrt". ... read more

This is my last night in Germany before heading to Amsterdam tomorrow afternoon. I left Ingo and Munich this morning and took the train to Stuttgart to have lunch with Alex Hoehn´s Mother. I don´t think I ever need to eat again! Everytime I thought we were finished she came out with another plate of goodies! It was great after eating so many sandwiches and pizza in Italy. She is a great cook! She really wanted me to stay there for the night but I didn´t have enough time to do that and catch the boat tomorrow. I wish I had planned to get there a little earlier and spend more time with her. She lives on a beautiful quiet street in a very nice home. Munich was great and I had a chance to meet ... read more

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! Hello Everyone!!! I have so much to report but I don't have much time to so I'm just going to give you all a quick update of where we've been so far (Jack and I). We started our trip in Pisa, Italy. I wanted to go see the leaning tower but we arrived in the late afternoon and didn't think we would be able to make it there and back to the train station to catch the train to Florence at a decent hour to get to Florence and find a hostel. So we just went start to Florence from the train Station. In Firenta (Florence) we saw a lot of great things, can't really remember all the names of it, it's in my journal. I'll fill you in when I have more time. ... read more

I got back from Germany yesterday after about what seemed like a three hour plane delay. For those who don't know, I stayed with family friends of my Grandpa Grauel's. Tina, she is 27, took me to an alternative dance club which was really fun and then we hit up some pubs the next night in Frankfurt. I spent most of my time in Mainz at Tina's. On Saturday we went to Wiesbaden (spelling??) which had a neat WW monument and it was a really pretty small village with a park that had an extraodinary view. On Sunday the family and I ventured to Heidelberg. We went to a castle that was partially destroyed in 1693(Orleans Succession war) of and again in 1764 (lightning). It had an astonishing view of the town from the castle, lots ... read more

Well, if I'm online from Mainz, and I am, then that's an excellent indicator that all the rest of my basic needs have been attended to (contrary to appearances, an internet café is actually not the first basic need I satisfy upon arrival to a new city). (Whew! Somehow I accidentally hotkeyed this computer over to the Arabic keyboard, then had to figure out, in German, how to switch it back....) Anyway, the morning in Salzburg was excellent. It was inevitable that once I decided to leave town early, I would think of several more things that I no longer had time to see or do (like visit the gate of Nonnburg Abbey, although it would have been a miserably hot climb even in the morning). Such is life. :) What I did get to see ... read more

February 16th 1972 - Day 4 A nice easy start to the day for Heather and I as our new friend from Stuttgart had promised to drive us to Heidelberg. One and half hours later and we were there. We were going to stay at Margit's house very near to the Centre. Margit was one of the students whom we had met in Bournemouth whilst she was studying English. Michael helped her with English conversation and Margit joined our social group during her stay. I did remember with some embarrassment that on her last evening, she picked some daffodils from the central park in Bournemouth to give to her B&B owner - ah well no harm really ! Margit had already left with Michael and so we talked with some of the students staying at the ... read more
